I have been living and working in dublin for 5 years I am in my thirties unmarried. I had previously lived and worked in the north and scotland. I lost my job and at then shortly after lost my rented accommodation, I have now had to live short term (I thought) with relatives in the north though their patience is waring thin (though I am still registered at previous dublin address). I want to return to dublin as soon as, but how do I get help with accommodation/ rent allowance I am afraid if I tell dole about current circumstances I will lose my JSA as well as I am living in north and travelling down to sign on. HELPPPP.

You should be claiming Job seekers allowance up North not down here, you could also look for accommodation up there as well.

You should only claim in the jurisdiction in which you currently reside.

The circumstances in which you are currently living is why the state is in so much debt, you should be reported for benefit fraud.

The money which the state is currently giving you goes now goes straight to a foreign government through taxes on any purchases which you make, instead of the state here recouping money through VAT.

PS Why do you have angry faces above when you are the one ripping people off???

You are currently defrauding the Government of Ireland, it is you who is breaking the law, not me. I'm sorry if the truth hurts.

PS. There is no need for name calling.

What you are doing is wrong, you are seeking help for illegal activities, don't expect any sympathy or help from anybody here. Actually, expect your thread to be locked possibly ;)

Do you come down south to shop and spend your money? People doing what you do make it harder for the rest of us, you also give us all a bad name. I understand that you are in a bad situation, but I lost my dole I didn't have to move home. Plenty of places to live down south, saying you have nowhere to live is complete bullshít. What would be more accurate is "I have nowhere to live that will reduce my outgoings".

What address do you use when claiming down in Dublin?

re "I lost my dole I didn't have to move home"
how did you pay your rent then?
I do not want to "defraud government" what I want is accomodation in dublin while claiming JSA and looking for a new job which up until a few weeks ago I was doing, until I could not afford to continue paying rent in old address and had to leave. I now spend some nights with relatives in north and some nights on mates sofas in dublin, but is my only option to use my jsa to find somwhere to rent (and if you know somewhere that cheap let me know) and if i do that will I then be entitled to claim rent allowance and if so after how long or is there something I can do instead.

I meant I lost my job, sorry, I didn't move back home when I lost it, I just had to get cheaper rent, and I didn't have savings or anything else. Shared a house with some student friends of mine. I went from renting a room for 90 a week to renting a room in a different area for 60 a week. A friend of mine lives on the north side of Dublin and he pays about 70 a week for a pretty decent sized room, bills excluded, but he's fairly lucky.

Dublin is tough, as the rent is naturally higher there, you will more than likely have to share a house with some people or get an extremely horrible, small, out dated bedsit for around 100 a week, which is nuts. You can apply for rent allowance after 6 months.

Your only option at the moment is to use your JSA to pay for rent, it's tough but very doable, just means you have to swallow your pride and make some sacrifices.

I suggest getting a place of your own soon, as the welfare crowd might catch on and you will be in a spot of bother with them. You will have to pay them all the money back. Somebody could tell on you or something, that would leave you in a much worse spot.

Jim, try not insult others, however hard it may be, it won't get you anywhere man, nobody will want to help you and the mods might ban you too.

Celticbest, the op's situation is not the reason why the country is so much in debt, it does contribute though.

If you are "living" in the north it would be in your interest to claim up there as technically your benefit could be stopped.
If you are in Dublin mostly, you're technically homeless so probably would be better off declaring yourself as so in Dublin and trying to get temporary shelter. You have to be 6 months renting in order to get rent subsidy AFAIK and in any case the limits are well below market rents.

I wouldn't be totally judgemental about the OP as I am being forced back to my parents house myself when my job goes as my rent is more than 200 euros a month over the threshold. Hopefully another job will come along in time though. It makes more sense for people to live with family if they can than giving big profits to parasite landlords anyway. Its not easy to have to move back home if you're over 35 and have nowhere else to go.

Not all landlords are parasites, they are people who had money and made an investment, no need to be like that towards them. Some are complete scum, but not all, most are actually very very nice.

When I last inquired about rent allowance you were allowed to rent a place up to 115 a week and you had to pay the first 24 a week or something, which is really good. Not sure if it changed again or not.
