Applying for New Position in Same Company

I have the opportunity to apply for a new position in my company. The position is on the same grade as my current one and I am definitely qualified to do the job but I've been told that my salary would be reduced as the approved salary for this job is lower.

I'm not exactly sure on how this works. I was under the impression that I could apply for positions that meant a lateral move and retain the salary I am currently on.

Has anyone any experience of this?

If the salary is lower than it's lower. You have no "entitlement" to maintain your salary unless it stipulates that in the HR policies.

I've seen this plenty of times before.
