Hi, I have a question that I've been thinking about for a while now - apologies if it has been asked before and I do think I posted it in the correct forum.

Being a foreigner trying to learn a bit of Irish - I've noticed that a lot of place names start with a certain prefix and I was wondering where they originate from. Do they mean a specific word or are they a "bastardation" in English from the original Irish word?

The ones I see most would be "Bally..." which I presume originates from the Irish word "Baila" meaning city?

Some other ones I'm curious about:

    - Kil(l)...
    - Knock...

Hoping someone can sort me out! Thanks
