Despite a false start, Safari 5 is now up and available to download from Software Update or from the Apple site.

    http://www.apple.com/safari/
Apple today released Safari 5, the latest version of the world's fastest and most innovative web browser, featuring the new Safari Reader for reading articles on the web without distraction, a 30 percent performance increase over Safari 4,* and the ability to choose Google, Yahoo! or Bing as the search service powering Safari's search field. Available for both Mac and Windows, Safari 5 includes improved developer tools and supports more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies that allow web developers to create rich, dynamic websites. With Safari 5, developers can now create secure Safari Extensions to customize and enhance the browsing experience.

definitely better than Safari 4.0 ---- giving it a fair run for the week. Will decide on Friday whether it replaces Chrome as #1 browser!

Reader has yet to kick on any article I have tried to read. Can someone give me a link for something that definitely works from them so I can see if I have an issue?

And here is todays main article on Cracked.com

    As you can see, nothing.

Edit: I have also not had it kick in on any articles on the BBC news Web site.

Both of those links work for me. BBC articles seem okay too.

Are you getting it on this one:

Another question. HTML 5 full screen isn't actually make the video fullscreen. Its just making it fill the browser. This happening for anyone else?

Yeah, same for me on Youtube.

Delighted with the return of the blue loading bar.

    Noticeably quicker too.

Surely the bottleneck for website loading is you broadband download speed?

I always here people comparing browser speeds and it always baffles me because I never notice a speed diff! Have you guys got millisecond impatience levels?! Lol

Downloaded "Perfect Browser" for my iPad last night.

Its the best browser i have used to date, much faster than either Chrome or Safari and better looking too.

Nice! Just downloaded this a few minutes ago and I'm already hooked on Reader.

Normally I find it a bit of a strain to read articles on websites. Not anymore!:D

If you want the Reader function in Chrome install the "Readability Redux" extension.

I do not get the obsession with readers - i just visit the full website.

I tried that tumblr site - my bad that site updates a lot some nice html5 extensions there now.

Hmm, it is a lot faster than Firefox. Might change, depending on what extensions come out.

So do I when the website is well designed and easy to read. But half the time that simply isn't the case. I go to most websites to read to the content, not stare at an unsightly mishmash of ads, social networking links and other crap flashing at me from the side of the screen. Then there's this annoying business of needlessly splitting articles into multiple pages. For anyone who hates bad web design, Safari Reader (and Readability) is a great solution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,246 ✭✭✭conor.hogan.2

True - but the content on those sites is usually more crap than the design so I dont bother visiting them regularly.

I dont see any reason to use reader as it is an extra unnecessary step and rss just doesnt seem worth it either.

Maybe I just visit the right/wrong sites?

    Keeps crashing on me !! Powermac Dual G5 - 3GB - Leopard 10.5.8.
No add-ins installed. Disabling Javascript seems to help.

    Happens mostly on facebook !

Are you definitely using the Leopard version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

It was installed through Software Updater so I would presume it's the right one. But worth checking out now that you mention it !

    Thanks Prof :)

I assume it installed the right version. If it keeps happening, maybe try deleting Safari's plist file and disabling all plugins (either in Safari's security prefs or by manually removing them). You could also try testing it under a different user account and see if the problem recurs. Might narrow it down a bit.

I haven't had any crashes so far, but I don't use Facebook.

Ok, I did a fresh install of Leopard on my Powermac G5 but Safari still crashes !! No particular site though - it seems to be random. Safari 5 on my MBP (Snow Leopard 10.6.4) seems fine though.

Not only that but Boards also crashes Opera and Firefox !! Not relevant here I know but thought I'd just mention it.

Disabling Javascript on Safari seems to help. All updates have been applied by the way.

    Ken
