I know you said no Topshop but the one on Oxford Street has a huge concessions area downstairs with tons of nice dresses from different labels that you wouldn't be able to get at home.

You shouldn't have much trouble finding something. Any shopping area will have lots of small boutiques, esp around the Covent Garden and Soho areas. Also, there is nice shop in the Westfield shopping centre called Lulu and Red that has really nice quirky dresses at reasonable prices.
