    i drove dublin - belfast - stranrar - glasgow.

do the drive from stranrar on a nice dry night or preferably in daylight. doing it at 2am having slept **** all the night before is a bad idea.

Oban is a lovely spot and is the only large town in that part of Scotland. From there you can explore the islands and the highlands quite easily.

Have a look at the ferry site here

I've recently visited Loch Ness and stayed in a lovely village called Drumnadrochit. It's perfectly situated for touring other areas around the Loch. We stayed in a very nice B+B a little bit outside the village, situated on a farm (www.greatglenbandb.co.uk). I really liked the area around Loch Ness.

Loch Lommand is also nice, was there a few years back. Some of the other areas in the Highlands, I found very isolated and not alot to do unless you are into walking or like driving through the countryside on really narrow roads!

This site http://www.visitscotland.com/guide/inspirational/itineraries/ gives some ideas for touring different bits of Scotland.
