I've just arrived in New York on my J1 and am having trouble finding an apartment to stay in for the next 3 months. Has anyone come over and found a place this summer so far? If anyone could give me any help or point me in the right direction to find a place it would be greately appriciated.

    Hey,

I did new york on a J1 last year...its very difficult to find a place in manhattan thats decent...u may haveta live further outside the city than you expect...i ended up in yonkers in the bronx...very Irish but made it easier to find accomodation. The Aisling centre on Mclean avenue are a great help...http://www.aislingcenter.org/index.html

at the time we really did not want to live in such an "irish" place but had the best summer.

basically my advice is to look a bit outside the city...safer and cheaper

DO you have a job yet??

If you're willing to move out of the city you could always come to Fire Island. Just take the LIRR to bayshore and get the ferry across, pretty handy.

Theres relatively few jobs now, but the season just started so in a week or 2 theyll be crying out for people. I arrived 2 days ago with nothing lined up and i got a job and accommo pretty fast.

Word of advice is call ahead and sort something out. Motels and hotels here are a MINIMUM of $200 a night. Crazy expensive for the J1er but Im expecting the tips to be brilliant. :D:D
