I am travelling to France in July for family holiday with the car and am thinking about taking out some breakdown cover in case something goes wrong.
Anybody have any experience of dealing with the various companies that offer this? Value, level of service etc?

Check with your insurance company first, you may have already have this cover under your policy.

http://www.breakdowncover.ie provides good priced insurance with nearly comparable benefits to AA's 5* for €139 and its only €79 with breakdowncover.ie and you also get 12 months breakdown cover in Ireland as well. AA only give you short term European cover for big money.

Also ensure your car is 1.5 tonnes or less in weight as policies do not cover cars above that. The Skoda Superb, for example, is 1.75 tonnes.

Is your car under manufacturers warranty? If so it will cover European breakdown. However, repatriation of a crashed vehicle is not covered by most insurances/warranty so AA 5 Star or similar is advised. The cost of getting an immobilised crashed car home can be in the thousands.
