Hey guys ! I am looking to start training as a Chartered Accountant in the Autumn. What route is the best to take ACCA or CIMA or CAI ? Are training contracts confined to the bin in the recession ? Any advice greatly appreciated. I have just finished my IATI final exams.

I am not exactly sure which is the best route. But there are definitely a lot more training contracts out there than there were this time last year.
If you decide to take the ACA route there are a number of vacancies listed on their website http://www.charteredaccountants.ie/General/About-Us/Chartered-Accountancy/Becoming-a-CA/Training-Vacancies/ .
Although these vacancies are listed on the CA website, some of the firms may support you to go the ACCA route if you are insistent on it.
However you would want to be a great candidate to argue that you don't want to go the ACA route.

I did ACCA at BPP and CPA at Griffith, but being honest the 3 private colleges (it was 3 when I was studying) are all much the same, you get out of it what you put into it.

J.Ryan Thanks for the reply, I thought as much just needed someone with experience to confirm for me as this is very new terriorty for me.
my last question is a little silly but I am returning to college after 20 years out of studying and I am prepared to get stuck in and study but is this a very difficult course and in your experience how many hours a week did you need to put in, I have kids so I am trying to weigh it all up before I commit.

Its been a while, but from memory, the more mature people in the class tended to have the better focus.

Study wise, if you have 8 hours of class, you might want to do 6 hrs of study in that week, but it all depends on the person, the best study in most of these subjects is not reading and re-reading, but doing exam questions.

The best teacher I ever had said to me that doing an exam question and getting it wrong is a great tool, as it shows you what you don't know and thats where you need to focus.
