hi , i have a quote for 1000 quid parts and labour for a vw golf ( 2002 ) 1.4 litre - transmission kit and clutch kit. is this about right or a rip off?

Clutch kit round €140.
Not sure how much a box costs but shouldn't be anymore than 4 - 5 hours later to fit both.

That's not too bad a price if a reconditioned box.

Is the box second hand or has it been reconditioned?
