Good running/walking clothes

I did a 7.7 mile walk today and feel reasonably good after it. However I've noticed one problem. Either my tracksuit bottoms or my jocks were rubbing against the inside my leg, leaving it quite red and inflammed. The same thing happened the other week and I thought it was the type of tracksuit bottom I was wearing then but I wore a different pair today and had the same issue. Although they didn't give me any jip yesterday and I walked 5 1/2 miles then.

I'd like to eventually do longer distances but it's going to be uncomfortable if this continues.

Any tips for types of tracksuit bottoms to wear or any other gear I could wear to stop this?

    Thanks.

I don't know, I'd usually wear shorts for that kind of distance (running). You could try out some different pairs - perhaps some with mesh lining? - or you could get some Bodyglide to stop the chafing.

i had the same problem when i started running and i bought a think called "body glide" its a Vaseline type think in a stick you just rub it between your legs and stops the rubbing and the redness, its in a stick so no messing around and it washes off easy to.. Not sure if that might help you also, you can get it in most sport shops about €12 .. another thing to try maybe is a pair of "skins" there like very tight shorts (cycling shorts without the padding) and stop rubbing and move the moisture away from your sensitive area,

Any idea where I can buy these "skins" online? I've found some on Amazon but the 3rd party seller doesn't ship them to Ireland.

most sports shops stock them, but online try wiggle.co.uk or prodirectrunning.com .. im sure there is irish sites like mysport.ie that stock them also..

I'd try some comfortable shorts first. You can get several pairs for the price of skins, which would be extremely uncomfortable arriving into summer. You can get decent sports shorts in TKMax for €10-€15

I find ths site good for running stuff. Delivery reasonably priced and fast and they have good deals sometimes in their sales.

Thanks for all the replies and links. I've got some Bodyglide, skins and anti-blister socks on the way. I'm hoping to do more and more walking and then migrate to jogging/running so they will come in handy. The chaffing has improved a bit overnight thankfully and I won't be doing any long distances again until the weekend by which stage it should have gone away. Hopefully the other items will have arrived by then too.

Thats just how i got into running too. Doing longer and longer walks and then slowly adding in small periods of running.

Once you're running regularly you'll notice the need to get rid of any seams that can rub! And also the first few times running its natural to feel like you're jiggling around a lot, you'll firm up fast though.

If it's leggings you're after, Ronhill tracksters are the way to go imo.

When you get chaffing use sudocrem on the area that night, helps with the healing.

+1 on what Krusty said about getting some comfortable shorts before forking out loads of money for skins.

the reason i suggested skins is grandmaster is walking in tracksuites at the moe and the skins can be worn under, not sure id like to be out wlking in shorts in the irish weather

Yeah I'm wearing tracksuit bottoms at the moment, I don't plan on changing to shorts anytime soon either.

I like to wear comfy shorts (not skin tight or cycle shorts) with leggings underneath. Helps with chaffing. I had the same problem after running the mini marathon on Monday (im a complete novice, first event) but I have wore the above since and they much more comfortable. I started the same way - walking with spurts of running in between. It works!! Starting a half marathon training schedule next week.

Is it just me or has the amount of people taking up jogging and running increased significantly? I meet so any people out now, more than I ever remember anyway!

Well done on the Mini Marathon. I'm planning to start C25K this weekend.

I'm not sure why so many more people are out jogging and running. Perhaps they got fed up of the extortionate prices that gyms charge. I've only been walking so far but I like that I can just go whenever I want. Like I set foot straight outside my door and thats it, I'm off and on my way. It became annoying sort of having to "travel" to just begin exercise. Plus I refused to go when the place was busy so that meant having to go first thing in the morning or leaving work early. And sometimes both were impossible.

I don't know how long it will last but so far, it's good for me.

or just the fact people cant afford it due to layoff's reduced working weeks etc , think that's the reason there is more peolpe out and about they have more time and it clears there head .. Also it might be just you have a intrest in it now so you will see more people out walking/running were before you might not have noticed them even dough they were there!!

I just discovered the brand Under Armour, in particular their TShirts, and now i'm a complete convert.

There may be alternatives I dont know but I was in a hurry and had left my tshirt behind and so I went to a shop and bought one. All they had was Under Armour so I got one.

They're light but tough and somehow keep out the cold but also keep you cool in the heat. I love it. I didnt get one of their expensive running shirts but I'm curious, they claim to suck the sweat off you like a syphon and make it evaporate away.

My "skins" arrived today, as did my Body Glide so hopefully that's the end of chaffing for a while. The skins were longer than I expected but they seem to fit ok. I was worried they'd be too short based on the pic but they seem to be fine and go down my legs to just above my knees.

Went for a 7 1/2 mile walk today. Used the body glide and skins, no chaffing. Happy days.

I have shorts by Nike and the inside 'support' feels almost like silk - never have chaffing issues, the mesh ones I would imagine could be a pain.

Time to resurrect this thread for me.

It's coming into the colder weather and I think I need some suitable running clothes for it. I bought some proper running t-shirts which are grand but I went out on Saturday morning for a jog at 8am and it was freezing (about 7 degree's) and I ended up wearing a old raggy fleece that I have.

I'm thinking about running the Jingle Bells 5K in December (my first race :o) so I was thinking it will most likely be colder then and I could do with some half decent running gear.

What type of tops do people recommend for running during the colder months? I'm guessing you go out in something other than a super thin race t-shirt and shorts?

I also need a recommendation for some good running bottoms. I typically don't wear running shorts and I prefer longer sort of tracksuit type bottoms, but the one's I have are a bit too big and long. Can someone recommend some other good tracksuit/running bottoms?

BTW: I'm about 16 stone and aiming to lose more weight so in a way, I don't want to spend an absolute fortune on stuff now when I'm aiming for it to be too big for me a bit further down the line.

to be honest a few minutes into the run and I've warmed up, unless it's very cold.
    You could consider
long-sleeved running top, of the same material as a tshirt
    running tights for the legs
    a sleeveless jacket
hat and gloves (for the start, taking them off after a few minutes)

Yeah I'll have to invest in a few of those things I think.

Any particular brands and stuff I should go for?

All of the running brands, Nike, Mizuno, Adidas... do running gear. You just have to make sure you're buying training gear - something that says it's a wicking fabric, polyester or nylon or something instead of cotton, I think the Nike fabric is called Dri-Fit? - and not just a tshirt with a logo. Just check the tag in the shop, or the description online.

Aldi/Lidl do the jackets every now and again, and you can get cheap hats and gloves in Penneys
