Hi. Thinking of going to DCU next year and I've to renew my gym membership at my local gym this month, but thinking of leaving it and getting a membership in DCU instead in September.

What are the facilities like? What is the price for the year?

Sorry I couldn't search this but gym is too small a word to search!

The gym is great if you're a student because it's cheap, but there is a huge problem with it...you're not allowed squat with a free-bar, only with dumbells or the Smith machine. Many people may not be too put off by this because there is a leg-press machine, but to me squatting with a free-bar is a vital exercise that can't be replaced by dumbells/leg-press-machine/Smith.

Apart from that it's fine (if you're not huge and lifting huge weights). I haven't trained in a good few months, but I'm told that it's got a lot more busy nowadays.

The gym in DCU is top notch. I've never been fitter.

Did the gym become good all of sudden? I remember at the open day, a student rep told me it isn't worth the money and students on sport scholarships only get to use the full extent of the gym.

Its a good gym and the student price is well worth i in my opinion. I mainly use the free weights and a bit of the machines and more or less all of what i needed was available there. At certain times of the day(mainly 6-8ish), it can be hard to get a bench and the weights you need which can mess up your routine. Also wish it was open more hours on weekends. There is more specialised equipment in the high performance gym and bigger weights and you can sneak in if you've a mate on scholarship.

Definitely have to disagree on this one. The cardio area is great, even though I hear when it's busy it can be hard to get a threadmill. However the free weights area is undoubtedly sub standard. It's not even fair to compare it to other gyms since it lacks a squat rack. It also lacks plates, and heavy dumbbells; so if you want to train heavy I'd consider somewhere else.

Of course the High Performance gym is pretty decent, but not many get access. The only thing it's lacking is decent bumper plates, and proper weightlifting bars.

Compared to UL's gym, DCU's is a joke. Of course that's only because UL's is unbelievable!

They have improved a lot this year. Gym floor staff fresher and happier lately.
In all businesses its the contact with the existing paying customer which sells new members.
Ongoing training of the reception staff which was badly needed seems to be bearing fruit and the overly made-up have hung their brooms up for the summer.

A level of feedback from members should be encouraged.

It'll be nice to have another Redsman around DCU. Too many of the 'other' crowd at the moment tbh. :P

Can I get into the elite gym if I am in the running club?

I think you have to be in the elite sportspersons scheme to use the elite gym. You either have to be on a scholarship or have special dispensation from a lecturer afaik.

Any club can organise training sessions in the elite gym.

Talk to the running club and see if there are organising it. I don't think they had any training sessions in there.

As for full out accessI think it's as thusspakesblixa says

Is there any good gyms in Drumcondra with a Pool? I don't think I will join the DCU gym as the weight section in the normal gym was very poor and I wasn't that happy with a lot of the equipment in the gym. I was there in 2007 and am going back in a few months to do a Masters.

if anyone is interested in a cheaper and alternative gym to DCU Sport or interested in doing free squatting or any weight training, DCU Weightlifting have their own gym an its free over the summer. Training most days during the week in evenings but times are flexible. We have about 4 bars, 2 olympic weightlifting bars, full set of olympic plates, squat racks, smith machine, dumbbells and pretty much everything you need for a solid work out.

During the year it's only 4 euro to join and 2euro per class with a fully qualified coach at each session.

    anyone interested email dcuweightlifting@gmail.com
