AV Query - BitDefender V Free AV???

Not sure where to post this thread so Mods you can move if you wish.

For the last year I've been using BitDefender (cost about €60) and it's up for renewal. Prior to this I used AVG but was having problems ensureing that it updated daily. Had my laptop in the workshop and the guy recomended BitDefender.

I have AVG on one other laptop and Avast on another at home and both seem to be managing to keep the dreaded viruses at bay (touch wood).

Anyway, looking for some advice and I know this is sometimes a personal choice rather than a software decision should I stick with BitDefender for another €60 or go for one of the free AVs, if going for the freebees which one is seen as the best?

    My OS is Windows XP.

    Thanks in advance.

    Get a free AV

    AVG/Avira/Avast the best

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought myself.

But not that I'm leaning towards free AV.....how do I decide on which of them is the best

Also, should I remove BitDefender before downloading the replacement AV?

The only decent way to decide is to see what the experts are recommending to users. Look at any malware removal forum and you will see that Avira/Avast are recommended the most.

And yes you should remove Bitdefender before installing a new AV

i have used avira before its a great free av program but i uninstalled it due to the fact the updates were a pain in the neck to download sometimes. i now use microsoft security essential.
it seems good no problems so far
imo the best paid one is eset nod or kaspersky

I removed Bitdefended and downloaded Avast today, BitDefended was out of date.

I should have asked in my OP how easy (hopefully I wont need to now) is it to remove Avast if I'm not happy with it or should the need arise? Does it leave any lingering little problems once removed by using add/remove sofware.

    its easy to remove

if add/remove programs fails, then use Revo Uninstaller to remove it
