LIGHTNING is an instructor in Mondello, shoot him a PM ;)

I did the beginner one last year. Had most of the fun in the Mazda 3. May only be a 1.6, but when your driving it flat out, its a totally different experience.
Its expensive, but if youve never been out on a track, its a great way to start.

Thats no shouting :D i was out in mondello on friday, had a few laps with one of the time attack lads as passenger, believe me you need to raise your voice to be heard in the car, Have to say i learned so much from someone who knows the track , i feel the difference in my driving is night and day now, go for it you wont regret it. Have to say the track and staff were A1, great to have facilites like this so local

    that looks like the job!

by 'clean' license..........do my penalty points count??

is it mostly all men at these things or is there a mix of the sexes?

A bunch of us did it last year. Great experience.

Bit pricey tis all. Especially for the video which is an extra €50 I think.

Their is a mix of the sexes but the majority of customers are men. You should be alright if your license has a few points on it but you can ring Jenny in the office to confirm.

Mad question, maybe, but why would points have anything to do with a track....? Come to think of it, what does having a licence have to do with it, either........?

I was just wondering about the video......hmm, I think charging for it is a bit OTT, tbh..........I'm trying to get the SO to do one, as she wants to do the Audi Sportscar one, but comparatively, Mondello looks expensive............(having said that, I've done it twice.......).........

A licence proves no such thing.......I'm sure Lightning would agree.......as would the GTC ! :D

Prove wasn't the right word. But thats being pedantic. Its an indication, and if you have a better alternative then you'd suggest it ;)

I would actually love to do this. Is that a one day course/experience? Everyone is saying it's expencive, but no one said the price. So how much is it?

I presume that's not 1.6 mazdas, but 2.0 turbo mps?

I actualy not much interested in that or seater, is it posible to swap time for a few more laps with Mazda?

See my ealier post in regard to the acutal course process, price is around 220if I remember correctly however check the Mondello website to confirm. We use 1.6 mazdas as the mps were too fast for what we needed. We had a mps to test and it was far too quick to function as a training tool. Considering that some students still manage to spin the 1.6 in the bone dry! Using the MPS wouldnt actually be helpful to 95% of the people we get in the school as they would be too much to handle.

We do get people that say they are not interested in the single seater and what I normally recommened is that they do the first two pace car laps and if they dont want to keep going the can pull in and we can sort something out.

However nearly everybody stays out as they really get into it. The usual response is "I wasnt interested in the single seaters initially but after two laps I didnt want to stop!"

Its around 220eu? You kiding? People are actually crying, becouse it's 220 eu?! Track day with club costs triple that with fuel, tyres etc! That's a freaking bargain!

I am deffo doing it then!!!

I presume you got all types of newbies written down in some rule book lol. I might like it lol.

Reason I am not that interested in it, as I like the actual car driving fast then a formula... Might sound stupid...

Well for some it seems expensive but if you do any racing or track days its not hugely expensive for all the above reasons you stated. If the single seater isnt for you thats fine but you would be suprised on the day if you change your mind! We are their to make sure you enjoy your time so we wont force you to do anything that you arent comfortable with.

cheers for info m8. i still dont understand how people can say its expencive, even if you dont do track days and not into joining clubs, its still a bargain for such experience.

i will have to sort it out this summer for myself. Is booking have to be done alot in advance? Is waiting list big?

sorry was writing that from phone at work, and that spelling checker changes words etc... makes it a nightmare...

What i ment is that i newer ever like forumla, it was so... unreal... something you would see only on telly and newer have a taste or touch of it...

Wheres driving something like your own car on the track is alot more fun. Something realistic, sensible, touchable.

its hard to explain... sorry :o

I was actually disappointed when I realised that it was the 1.6 mazdas that were used there because I did the zoom zoom day at mondello & we all got to have a couple of laps in a 3 mps. When I then heard that they were now running a fleet of mazda 3s, I assumed for some reason that they were all mps. Having said that, I drove the 1.6 around the track when I did the racing licence course there & its a nice enough drive, even quick for a 1.6 & plenty of feel too imo.

The only issue I had with the hatchback was the gearbox seems a little woolly and indistinct. I got 4th (I think) instead of 2nd a couple of times. No problems with the single seater, though mine was missing a gear, 1st or 2nd I can't remember. Wasn't an issue though, didn't need it. I think I enjoyed the Single Seater best. You just want to do a ton more laps. I was going too slow initially and let someone past, but it was more fun after that as I had someone to catch, and was definitely faster after that. We caught up on those ahead and trying to get closer was a blast.

The only reason that would be is if it had a short-shifter, which I doubt?

Or else you're bad with gears :pac:

Have I ever missed a gear in a car I'm driving for the first time. Certainly. :)

No short shifter standard 5 speed H-pattern. As for the single seaters some are missing 2nd and some 1st but they are never used on track so its not and issue. ...

Well that wasn't my experience. It wasn't an issue anyway.

LOL...I don't know what ye're moaning about, why, when I were a lad, I did the course in an old Formula Vee and Fiesta 1.25.............aye, they were they days....

...amazing how quick you can go on a 'std' car with sticky tyres, though........

I took you up wrong my bad. I thought you meant the cars missing gears are not used. Whereas you said/meant the gears aren't used. I was on a different wavelength for a minute. :D

just referring back to my penalty points - they're for speeding, which might be an advantage on the day eh!

(alright, it's not funny to joke about speeding, I'm being bold!)

Did the start line course back in apr, and im dying to do it again, and do them all.

I can vouch for the instructors they need to talk and shout at you, its a race prepared car.

I spent the 50quid on the USB and it was a little more then i wanted to spend but its the only memory i have of the afternoon it passed so fast.

If you like cars you'll love it. Its a different experience.

Everyone is going 1.6 so slow, it'll feel fast when your in it!

250 quid was a bargain and a great birthday present.

LIGHTNING, when your there I was wondering could you let me know if Mondello has noise limits on track days?

I remember reading on dtdirl that enforcement of a decibel limit was coming into place in Mondello for open/public track days.

....And as for the shouting people should be aware that both the instructor and the student are wearing full faced helmets as well as being in a race prepared car so we do have to speak a little louder than normal!

Also theres a lot to remember all at once, so the instructor has to get your attention.

Thanks to everyone for the info, my husband got me a Start Line course for my birthday, based on discussions on these boards.

It was absolutely fantastic; exhilarating, thrilling, and now a fabulous memory.

Just one piece of advice to add for the girls: wear a sports (or no) bra!

They strap you in TIGHT into the cars, especially the one-seater, and then you're thrown around a bit, so the clasp and the adjuster thingeys at the back of the bra straps leave bruises. They lasted over a week, so just want to help others avoid this. :)
