Can anybody recommend a good, user friendly bit of production software, preferably low cost :)

Audacity is free, and can do quite a lot for free software, but the most used softwares are:

    Logic
    Ableton
    Cubase
    Pro Tools
    Reason

So have a look through them and see which you prefer. Logic or Ableton are the best IMO, but they're not that cheap.

Maybe give Reaper a shot, its a lot cheaper than most software and will fulfill most needs. You can try out a demo which is fully functional for around a month.

FLStudio is good to start with. Comes with everything you'll need to begin with as well.

Agreed. I found FL Studio a very logical way to work while learning the how and why of music production. You can produce pro level stuff and upgrades are free, which is nice.

Reaper is a super prog and also works very well as a mixing environment if you are doing your creative work in another DAW.

Ableton, great if you are working towards doing live work, most folks find it intuitive. I use it all the time but did find it pretty illogical after using FL Studio for several years.
