DEBIT CARDS v LASER CARDS

I know that to be able to accept Laser online you need an IMA.

    But what about debit cards?

My wife has just been issued one and it got me wondering.

    1. Is this the norm from now on?

    2. Will I need an IMA to accept orders online from customers using debit cards?

    3. Do I really need an IMA?
What I mean here is, do I need to bother jumping through hoops to get an IMA to be able to accept laser online if I can accept debit cards without one.

    4. Are debit cards taking over from laser cards in their popularity? as they seem more versitile?

    Thanks.

I though laser cards were debit cards

Yes laser cards are debit cards. You can accept them without a IMA using moneybookers.

I should have said that she's got a Visa debit card.

It seems different from laser as I can buy items from the UK using it and I couldn't with the laser card.

In the UK they accept Solo instead of laser.

I know that Laser cards are debit cards but there obviously is a difference here, and I'm trying to find out if I'll need an IMA to accept one.

Does anyone know if PayPal will accept Visa Debit Cards?

Thanks Wats in a name, I just reread your reply.
I'll look into moneybookers, but don't they charge a way higher rate than the likes of Realex.

    Thanks again.

The reason they charge a higher rate than relax is because moneybookers act as your PSP & IMA. While Realex is just a PSP and you need a IMA aswell.

Thanks alot for the info Wats, very, very helpful.

    One more question.

Are Visa debit cards as widely used as Laser cards?

No, but I they are gaining ground. Visa debit is now the most common debit card in the UK. Laser is more expensive, limited to Ireland and I'm not sure they support the latest anti-fraud features that Visa/MC use.
