Originally, like a lot of people myself and my friends had planned to fly to bangkok and then travel up to chang Mai but because of all the trouble they've sworn against going north. would it be wise to avoid chang mai ?? I'm looking foreward to doing the islands but I don't wanna spend the entire 3 weeks on them!!

I read the thread title as 'Is Northern Ireland safe this summer'.

From what I hear it is. People I know who've been travelling there have just gone directly from Bangkok airport up North to avoid the worst of the trouble, but you can never be sure.

How about getting a cheap Air Asia flight somewhere safer then? I presume you'll be somewhere near Phuket when you're on the islands. From there you can fly to 6 international destinations with Air Asia. My personal favourite is Malaysia. Some of the islands there are tax free so the drink is cheap. And it's an amazing place to buy electronics.

By then the trouble in Thailand may have calmed and it might all be fine.
