...where capturing the capital city of a large empire led to the chance of a civil war and the empire splitting in two? I've played all the civ games and the two Call of Power games and was just trying to remember which one had this feature?

I really liked it at the time because as the underdog you could plan a daring assault on a capital city early in a war and watch as a leading civ in the game was effectively cut in half. Sometimes it was a pretty cheap tactic if the AI wasn't up to properly defending such an important target, but I liked the dramatic game changing effect that this one battle could have.

I'm fairly sure that was the original Civilization, if not that then it's Civ 2, but pretty sure it's the first one. It didn't always happen though, so you could be playing that a while to see it again.

Definitely wasn't the first one, the engine was much more advanced than civ1. It had proper nation borders and trade routes, which the first didn't. I think it may have been civ2, or call of power 2. Hmm.

It was Civ II - I never played the original Civ.

Seconded. Civ II. Wasted many hours of my life playing that particular iteration of the game.

I once spent 4 hours on a single turn

It was indeed Civ 2. If you were ever unfortunate enough to have your capital captured, you'd get the message : "Do you want to move your government?" and an option to do so for about 1000 gold. If you didn't click yes, there was a chance part of your empire could rebel. Presumably the AI had the same option so sometimes you'd have to take 3-4 capitals before it would work. It was a handy option if their capital was on the coast....

Civ 4 has something a bit similar. I've seen AIs grant independence to their overseas colonies after a damaging war. Only if there's other ways of winning than conquest or domination though.
