Last year, FIFA fined Ivory Coast's football federation $46,800 after 22 people died in a stampede at a World Cup qualifying match.

Bit on the low slide.. Fekin hell.

No mention of any deaths in the article - where did you get that info?

EDIT - 12 fans, 1 policeman injured, according to the Beeb. No reports of deaths. Yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

How come these football game stampedes always occur in Africa?

If S.Africa is too incompetent to host a warm up game between Nigeria and N.Korea then what sort of sham is the World Cup going to be?

Possibly. It was jsut a friendly, though and it doesn't give the size of the stadium. You can guarantee they'll have better control once the tournament starts. That said, there seems to be a lot Nigerians there and I'm guessing they don't all hae tickes.

They may well have to be on the ball (pardon the pun) next Saturday when Nigeria play Argentina.

It's probably the English in their blood from back in the colonial days.

They don't always occur in Africa - a lot have, but that is in part due to the safety standards in the stadium. However, the rest of the world has had it's fair share of football stadium disasters.

Off the top of my head, there were deaths & mass injuries in European stadiums; Heysel Stadium, Ibrox Stadium, Bradford & Sheffielfd.

    Sounds just like Hillsborough.
