NCT fail due to no e-mark on tyres

I failed the NCT the other day as my tyres have no e-mark. I wasn't aware of this new requirement, just reading up on it, it became effective since 1st April 2010.

    http://www.rsa.ie/RSA/Vehicles-and-Legislation/Vehicle-Standards/E-mark-on-tyres/

I bought them in May 2009, I've only done about 12k miles on them, but the tester told me I need 4 new tyres with an emark.

Where do I stand with the tyre dealer? Apparantly it's illegal to sell & fit tyres with no emark, but I assume this only came into effect recently, so I'm not clear where I stand.

    Cheers.

anyone else find it worrying how often these threads are coming up these days? I wonder just how many of these non E tyres are out there.

OP - there are a couple of recent threads on this subject, have a search of the forum for advice. They've been illegal since 1997 iirc

Yet another pointless moneymaking piece of Irish legislation.

    It's EU legislation, not Irish.
It's been illegal to sell them since 2007 and it's only since April 2010 that the NCT test is enforcing this

Here is the first article in google

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0413/tyres.html
Industry experts have warned that thousands of motorists may not pass the NCT because their car tyres do not meet new regulations introduced this month.

The AA and the ITIA says they are receiving calls from concerned motorists about the problem.

The Tyre Industry Association estimates that 50,000 tyres here do not conform to the European standard that is a now a requirement to pass the NCT.

Ireland is the last country in Europe to start testing cars for the 'E-mark'. The Road Safety Authority and the NCT are advising motorists to check their tyres.

The Irish Tyre industry Association said today that motorists who have kept their receipts should return the tyres to suppliers for replacement.

Since the regulations came in to place more than 20 people a day are failing the National Car Test because they do not have an 'E-mark' on their tyres.

Cheers mate. I'll call into the place where I bought them next week, see what the guy says. I wouldn't have bought non emarked tyres intentionally, nor should he really have sold them to me.

Just checked my tyres (NCT due) and found 2 with E mark and 2 without. Shock horror . But all 4 tyres are the same make brand and type :confused::confused:

Anyway noticed a direction mark on the two tyres with an E mark but no similar markings on the tyres without so checked both sides of the sidewalls and found all 4 had E marks

phew :D didn't want to go buying 2 new tyres.

My car is going for test later this month. It has 5 Pirelli p7000's on it in excellent condition.
Trouble is that the wheels have been in storage for a long time and the E mark is not present.
Bit of a bummer really but I'll swap wheels over from the E39 for the test. Should be ok.

If you bought a car recently with tyres that do not have the E mark do you have any come back with the dealer considering the car was sold with tyres that do not meet the safety guidelines?

I'm the OP, I went back to the tyre dealer, he said this was the first set he ever had back with no emark. He replaced the tyres with brand new tyres and sent the non-emark tyres back to his supplier.

Sound guy, sorted it out very quickly for me.

Borrow / rent a set of EU stamped wheels for the day of the NCT test and then swap them back. :)

They could of implimented this a lot better.

Agreed minimum statards of items that are important for safety, but, they should haves first made it illegal to sell non E marked tyres then 18-24 month later made it a pass/fail in the NCT. Give people a chance to change over. It is very harsh on people who bought tyres in good faith only a few months ago.

    Wow OP,

I really wasn't expecting that to happen. Fair play. I was half expecting the tyre centre to play the fool.

    They did!

Most of the tyres that are being failed due to no E Mark have this mark on the inside of the tyre wall and the testers are not checking here...

There is a good chance you do have this mark on your tyres and still failed your test

Apparently, it actually has been illegal to buy/sell non emarked tyres since 2007. The NCTS started testing this on April 1st, 2010. Therefore you would probably expect most people to have gone through a set of tyres during that period.

I watched the guy doing the test, he checked there on all tyres. There was definitely no e-mark on the tyres.
