i was telling a guy about the tikka supervarmint that i was buying, and part of the deal was that i would have to get the barrel threaded myself.
yer man i was talking to said that this was a bad idea because it could ruin the accuracy, and also because it would void the warranty of the gun.
does anybody else have any feedback on this, because i'm about to back out of the deal since the dealer is refusing to get the barrel threaded even if i pay a bit more for the gun

Getting the barrel threaded wont effect your accuracty ,imo.Sounds like your dealing with a wrong dealer .Any gun dealers i have delt with would have no problems getting a new rifle threaded .Best of luck which ever road you take ;)

doing this work is at your own risk , the warranty would be invalid on the firearm also it would be out of proof .

iv yet to hear of one not shooting better with a mod on . there is something odd going on hear ,me thinks .

i would shop around a bit more

    2 points.
1.The guy supplying the thread job supply's new warranty. Ok'ed by Irish law. As the person business had to be approved by DOJ.
    2. If you get an idiot to do the job and he messes up your crown then your accuracy will dis-improve.(hence your accuracy concerns)

Go to a competent gunsmith/Custom rifle builder and get it done.
A moderator installed properly can only help improve your accuracy.
It will slow down the round a bit though, mine shoots ~4" high with mod off.
I never take mine off, but I did once when I had the job first done.

While you are getting the thread job done your crown could be improved also as part of same cost or small addition of price. Great idea IMHO.

The Caveat being, I have seen appalling thread jobs; a Lidl Dye drove on to the top of a barrel don't make a gunsmith ;)

Or any die for that matter! A die should only be used to clean off the last few thou after the job has been done on a lathe by a competent gunsmith. Seriously, there are some 'gunsmiths' out there who are so skilled that they can convert your barrell into a corkscrew:eek:;)

bull . if i got my rifle threaded and i claimed i could shoot 10mm groups with it and now all i can get is 20mm .

did the guy that done the thread job "claim " accuracy would improve or at the very least say the same . did any one ever get this in writing i think not .

so i bring my rifle back to the dealer he will tell you to F off as will the importer as will the maker .

also the rifle is out of proof .

i'm living a few miles outside thurles, so i'm sure people can guess who i'm buying off of without me naming any names. i've bought all my stuff off this guy in the past and i've never had any problems, but the other guy i was talking to last week has 40 years experience with rifles and his brother is a gun dealer too. i'm wondering could he be just trying to get a sale for his brother?
if anyone knows a good gunsmith capable of doing the job, send me a pm with his name and number so i could talk to him about it.

Yeah, and that would cover you for the threading, not the rifle.

If a person gets anything modified it goes out of warranty fro Manufacturer. Every Reputable RFD will get a competent person to carry out the work. If there is any reason that as a Result of poor Craftspersonship that the firearm malfunctions, then you go back to the person that done the work, if A dealer got the work done than you go back to the dealer.

You do not go back to the states over a warranty, the warranty lies with the person who sold the rifle to you and the person who did the work.

If a Custom rifle builder puts your pride and joy in his lathe and makes a hames of it, then he owns it.

So OP, Follow my advise and go to a Quality/Reputaple RFD/Customrifle builder and get your thread job.
Then enjoy getting bunnies. I'm of myself soon to get some ;)

We do not have, or want!! a proof house in Ireland.

A proof house blows the sh1te out of your barrel, they they stamp can handle up to X amount of pressure.
It does not test the accuracy of your rifle or your warranty.

You run a bigger risk sending your Rifle to England; than getting a thread on here because you are sending it away for 6months min, and that is if the courier does not LOSE IT. + you need a permit to leave and enter Ireland all which equates to about 8months.

Why does paddy want to give all his money away? thread job €90 competent RFD/custom 5rifle builder to do.
    Why do you think the USA have no proof house, and they are the biggest claim(litigation) culture in the world ;

    ???

Really? I thought that proof house would cover you if you were to sell the firearm on etc (from a safety point of view). It might not be necessary in all cases ( if you intend keeping firearm).

This 'paddy' does not want to give his money away. However having been advised to get rifle proofed after such work I figured it was the way to go and having had this work carried out 6 years ago and there being no proof house in Eire where was i supposed to go? Maybe I was ill-advised.

Also had firearm re-barrelled in Germany, both barrell and mod was proofed upon return. Not by request, it just seemed to be included. Why?

It may have been a german law, or more likely you were just told it was for a few extra quid.
I have heard a lot of tall ones in my days.
A certain RFD was death on .223's as he was left with a shed load of hornets, magnums, 17HMR's he could not shift.
That was 3 years ago and I still hear reports coming back from his place.

Did you ever get the BHP/KW output of your car engine tested?
They put it on a rolling road drive the dung out of it and then say yeah it's 200bhp, now your engine is wan*ed but i proved it could create 200BHP

    Therein lies the Proof ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 376 ✭✭sikastag

Right, see your point. Like the analogy. Car may be w*nked after bhp test but thankfully neither barrel was and new barrel am very happy with accuracy. As I said some work I got done was at least 6 years ago, perhaps more. Just read how the law changed in uk on jacksons rifles website around 2002 regarding surpressors etc. so know where I stand. I'll let the thread get back on track.

Ease up on the stfu instructions please jw - just because you had a good experience doesn't mean others can't have poor ones.

On-topic, threading should be an easy job, but there are horror stories of incompetence out there. Check the reputation of someone before getting work done, and if it costs an extra ten euro, consider the cost of replacing your entire barrel before deciding to take the cheap route.

If the gunsmith makes an absolute hames of the job and you can prove that (you did take a decent clear close-up photo of the barrel and crown before handing in the rifle, didn't you?), then yes, you could take them to small claims court to get your money back at least, and possibly sue for damages - but it's not the same as a warranty agreement (that's almost certainly voided when you do the work) and it's a total Pain as well. Better to avoid the problem if at all possible. As to re-proofing, it's a legal requirement in the UK and most of Europe, but not in Ireland. How much it's worth, well, that's a matter of debate obviously.

    Yup.
Fact: You had a good experience and so think it's a good idea.
Fact: Others have not and don't.

One fact doesn't make the other incorrect. And neither means that you can ignore the first rule in the forum charter and tell someone else to stfu. So don't, please, it's quite uncivil.

JW, without naming names I can not back up my statement about waiting months.
I will ask the person tomorrow for there permission to post. If they say yes I will.

The main point of my post was, We Irish Citizens do not need or want a proof house, as they prove nothing other than they can fire 120% of recommended powder load out the barrel without exploding.

The op wanted to know about a thread job, somewhere this thread went wrong.
thread jobs are easy if you have the ways and means, 20 mins work on average.
I have seen 4 done in recent months.
I have had my own done and I have my crown done.
i have seen a marked improvement in accuracy where I have provided photographic evidence.
I did not get my thread job done by the same individual who did the crown (i suspected a deterioration in accuracy post orig thread job),
i have held in my hand a thread job that i would do better myself with a lidl dye kit and a vise.

I wanted to warn OP of haveago Gunsmiths.
A colchester or Harrison lathe can be bought quite cheaply, knowing how to operate one precisely is a skill learned over time.

If a mod is off thread (pardon the pun) the round could go out the side of it.

A few days ago, someone reported the numerical amount that a certain Senator was claiming in travel expenses and the numerical distance that he was actually travelling. They didn't call him a crook or say he was full of it, they just reported the facts and that Senator will probably have to resign as a result.

In other words jw, if you can post facts showing someone's wrong, do so, and more power to your elbow, it's what the forum's here for. If you can't, don't. But either way, be civil. Stop posting that people who disagree with you are "full of it" as those were the three little words our hearts longed to hear.
