Network Drive - Server - FreeNAS ?

I have a 1TB harddrive attached to my network via my wireless router/modem.
It is accesible to all computers on the network via SMB.
I'm quite new to Networking/Servers, but I understand that programmes like FreeNAS and Openfiler both require a seperate computer - is there anything like those programmes that can be run directly off the networked hard drive ?

    Thanks in advance,
    ROCKIN
