I'm thinking of getting a new car. At the moment I've a 9 year old car that's suddenly turned into a bit of a banger.

I reckon I could get €1000 for it if I was lucky on a trade in. I've about €12000 to spend, don't want anything to big, but like something with a bit of poke in it. I do a fair amount of mileage (15,000 pa) so need something comfortable

So far I've whittled it down to a 2006 mini cooper, a tdi golf, a 2.2l Honda civic (diesel).

    What do you reckon?

Golf or mini are both nice cars. The honda is a bit old manish plus if its less than 2008 the tax will be cruel. All good cars though.

Have you any links to the ads btw...

    Hi Joan,

if you have family/friends to carry around in your car the cooper is out, still a fun car though great styling.
The Golf will carry anything, and the 1.9tdi engine is bulletproof, great for high mileage.
The Honda is a good car, very reliable and a great engine. Big tax bill for the 2006 model though.

    Hope that helps ya

I shouldve known that'd get suggested! But no, already own a skoka and definitely do not want another one - Regardless of how great people say they are! It's also a bit big for my liking. I dont really need a family sized car (yet)

Im not at all a Ford person, but have you driven one of the high spec Focus 1.6 diesels?
    Surprisingly pokey and comfortable.

In fairness the Octavia is a good bit bigger footprint than a golf, and there's a bit of badge going on there too ;)

you have to ask yourself what you like. I love sporty estates. I don't need an estate, I just like them. My point is don't be so quick with the car prejudices. I'd look at a golf gti if I were you.

because my current car's a skoda I'd like something different and like bodhan said, there is the badge issue...I'd like to move up in the car world ha ha.

I think a golf tdi is probably my most sensible option because it's roomier than the mini and I do plan to hold on to it for at least five years

    thanks for all the suggestions!

    Actually,
I know of someone that previously owned an Audi.. BMW.among others.. and now owns an Octavia vRS and swears that it is by a mile the better car he has owned out of the 3, But hey..
He is most certainly not a badge snob...
Just a wise buyer.. But each to their own :pac:

jaysus, that nissan would bankrupt me having to pay for petrol and road tax so I'm afraid that's a no go.

as for the beetle, it's 1.4l, seems a bit weedy... Would it be in anyway nippy??

and to colm_mcn - lol on the three week ban. You lads are obsessed with those octavias :D

If you cant beat them then join them
And it would take a good car to beat a vRS for the money :pac:

Go on... you know you want to..
Test drive one and put a huge smile on your face.. (Or we will send colm_mcn after you)

    mandatory forum expulsion surely imo!
    ;)

this is harping back to that other thread, there were loads of posters who looked down their noses at a VRS in favour of a golf. The mind boggles !

Is it just me or does anyone else think the Mini has a brutal layout ?

The boot is a shelf, the back seats are cramped .. very poor visibility out the windows, the speedo is in the middle of the dash ?!? and the Controls are weirdly positioned, Door Window switches are also in the middle.

Relatively simple choice... if you want good handling, go for the MINI. If you want a well equiped, comfortable and quirky looking car, go for the Honda (would be my choice by a mile, great engine and great interior), and if you want to blend in and have a rattley engine go for the Golf.
And a car to beat the VRs for the money? Mazda 6 MPS. Beats the VRS in every way! Looks, power, handling, comfort... everything!

    LOL
2.3.. Beats it on road tax as well
On those terms an audi RS4 would kill the Mazda
That list could go on forever.
I was stating in the value for money department as well as everything that goes with it.

So was I. Same year, same price range, it's a fair comparison, even though you can't see past Skoda, other cars actually do exist, and there is nothing wrong with my post.
You'd swear you were the founder of the Skoda motor company. RS4's are rather more expensive, and €200-odd per year more for the Mazda's road tax - is that the best arguement you have in defense of the VRS?
The VRS is a good car, the Mazda 6 MPS is a better car. It's that simple.

I never said the mazda was a bad car nor did I say that no other car exists.
No need to get emotional over it :D
Have you got a link to the Mazda ? I would like to have a look ;)
