Studying Medicine in Eastern Europe

Hi, I have a few questions about studying medicine in eastern Europe:

Where would the best place to study it be? Czech Republic? Hungary?
Is it too late to apply?
How difficult is it to apply?
I only study Biology; is this enough?
    Is there a qualifying exam?
What sort of Leaving Cert points would I need?

If you have any good websites or people I could contact, please post here as well; I haven't been able to find much on Google.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

I just saw this on studyhungary.hu:

    Ireland
    Dublin
    22-23 May, 2010

    Location: Oatlands College
Address: Mount Merrion, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin

Looks like it's too late to do that exam. :/ Do I still have options?

Woah - no need for the red there.

You would need to be sure whatever course you study is recognised by medical authorities back here - or whereever you intend to work.

Also there is a forum for health sciences education where you might get specific information - I've seen thread like this before come up there:

Got a cousin nearly finished out in Warsaw Poland,it's cheap but I don't think it will be easy to seek employment in Ire/UK as most experience is obtained on the wards and Hospitsls here are hesitant to grant people employment where the standard of teaching was not English based.
It's easier to get a place than in Ire/Uk,would help if you have a science background and could shorten the time to qualify.

yeah,i think the deadline for budapest is closed. What the others are saying is correct.if u want to come back to ireland afterward forget it.The states is the only viable option afterward if u want to get onto a decent training scheme and its very difficult to get licensed there:(

    Hi OP,

I can't speak for medicine but I have heard anecdotally that it is be difficult, although not impossible, to get into schemes here in Ireland as the training hospitals are allied to the various colleges, UCC, UCD, UCG, TCD etc.

However it is untrue to say that the States is your only option afterwards, should you decide to pursue medicine in eastern Europe. In any event you would have to complete the MLE's (medical licensing exams) to enable you practice stateside. I suggest, if you are interested, in making contact with a doctor you know or getting in touch with the professional body that represents doctors in this country and get an informed opinion.

I myself have will be attending Semmelweis Uni in Budapest, having completed pre-med last year out there, although it is Dentistry that I will study. There is no problem with my getting work here when I qualify of anywhere in the EU or India. (I have researched this thoroughly) Again I would need to complete further professional exams to practice in the States. I know several Irish students off hand who are studying medicine in Hungary and foresee this number increasing with the introduction of the HPAT last year. People come from all over the world, including America, Japan, Korea and Asia to study in Hungary. The training is exceptional and the standard is tough once you get in. This is akin to the stick, the carrot being the easier method of gaining entry!

In short I would assess your options thoroughly.
    - Are you willing to repeat the LC & do the HPAT?
    - Do you feel you are a 600 point candidate?
    - Is the UK an option?
If not & it is your ambition/dream to become a doctor then go for it and cross the other bridges when you come to them, but be informed first. There are fewer places than applicants here in Ireland and being in the EU affords you the opportunity to study in the East without a visa so I feel Ireland will come around to this idea as the years progress and more people elect to pursue this course. This is only my personal opinion however.

Finally. Best of luck whatever you decide!
