came back from New York 2 days ago, the bastards broke my luggage locks

Was with my girlfriend over in New York for the 1st time. I was not sure what the story was and went back to the airport early. Turns out we checked in our luggage around 2-3 before anyone else, so the staff had plenty of time with the bags.

We arrived back in Dublin airport and I found the top of my suitcase loose. I then looked at the bag and there was a big mark on it, it had been broken open, same with the other one. Fortunately though it seemed they were only looking for electronics and left all the clothes there.

If yiz are going abroad, watch yer effing luggage, cos it can get stolen.

If nothing was taken, could it have been customs?

Customs can, and will, break open locks. However, they should leave some sticker etc saying this.

If you believe that your lock was broken open by someone other than customs, then get in touch with the airline.

The TSA in US routinely breaks locks on bags.
There should be a note in the bag.

Next time get TSA approved locks.

I brought back loads of multi vitamins and Omega 3 tablets, which made a noise when moved. Could this have caused them to break the locks?

Was there a note in the bag? If not, then it probably wasn't customs that did it. I had both bags searched going from Vegas to LA last year and there was a note in both bags. One of them was in an empty top pocket, so check all the pockets in the case for a note.

It said something along the lines of; if your bag was locked, then we had to break the locks, sorry about that, but you are not entitled to compensation.

Same happened to us last september going to florida. Got to our hotel and there was a note in one of our bags to say it had been opened. Wouldnt have even known. Dunno why poeple bother with locks, if they want to get into your bag they will. And as for putting them off, it will probably make them look more at your locked bag thinking you have more valuables in it.

Unless you do it at the luggage desk on arrival, they won't really want to know.

Another problem is, airlines wont cover dmae to extrernal pretruding parts of baggage like handles, wheels, locks etc. If there was items taken without the TSA leaving a note then you need to contact the airline, international law says you have 7 days after arrival to do this.

I haven't found a note at all, but there was nothing taking. Strange.
