Stalking Rifle

A friend of mine has asked me to keep an eye out for rifles for him as he may come into some money to get into stalking over the next year or so. Just looking to see whether there are any guys out there looking to sell a stalking rifle or who know of one for sale. Ideally it would be a .308, but I'm sure he'd consider comparable guns like a .270 or a .30-06. Budget will be a wee bit tight, but let's see what's out there and what people are looking for first.

What is the budget? Does it include sights?
if money is an issue, get him to make a shooting stick/sticks, saving €145
.308 is the cheapest ammo AFAIK
    A second hand scope fixed 6 ~€200

Baikal or CZ would be the cheapest.
I would say min €600 to get shooting.

It is a buyers market though.

He'll want something middle-weight and accurate. Personally I think the Tikka Hunter is too light, but something like a Sako M591 or a CZ550 American would be perfect. I don't want to commit to figures on prices, but he's not going to be able to afford too much, so let's just try get decent offers and see what we can find for him.

I'd say he'd want to keep it all in to around the grand mark, so it won't bother him if the scope's not brilliant or the rifle's a little old and a bit dinged up.

Varmint. Nothing light about that barrel.

All up now-so it's time for a snooze.

The gun is my Sako 75 .308 varmint (laminated version) with stainless fluted barrel, shown here with it's stalking Sako synthetic stock on to save a little weight.
Scope is a Bushnell elite 4-12x40 but now passed on to my son for his 223.

    It's shooting well enough

    Good groups, Nice rifle.
What does your son have, just out of interest. Does he have a stalking rifle?

How long would you boil/roast a rifle and scope for :p

most siko`s(sako) need about 120 minutes to boil ...
first boil for 30 min then change the water to get em to shoot half desent..
then boil for another hour and a half to get em to shoot straight...

Sako's may be different but with a CZ I'd always pour half cup of gun oil over the gun before roasting!

Actually a CZ550 or an older BRNO would be perfect for this guy, with a straight American stock preferably, in .308.

Yes would definately recommend the american stock as mine is for open sights and needs a cheek riser!

Great gun tho very under-rated, I'll only be getting rid of it to make way for a custom stalking rifle!(probably .270 again)
