Bit of an unusual question, is there a way of downgrading a car's max laden weight
Eg you have a car that has kerb weight of 1500 kg and max laden weight of 2000 kg. Can the 2000 be changed to say, 1900.

Seems as though this can be done for commercial vehicles in the UK, see this discusssion
    http://www.fwi.co.uk/community/forums/downplating-downrating-vehicles-2191.aspx

Also, is there an "official" max laden weight for a passenger car. I know weights can be found in handbooks and brochures - but i just looked at one of my cars there and the only weights on the VIN plate are 0000 kg. Also, on the registration certificate, the "permissable mass" and "mass in service" are both 0 kg.

    Why?

If it's for towing they've changed the wording on the RSA site so the combined weight isn't taken into account anymore.
    B
Vehicles with seats for up to 8 passengers and a maximum weight of 3,500kg (includes pulling a trailer where the maximum weight of the trailer when fully loaded is 750kg or less)
    EB
Combinations of vehicles with drawing vehicle in category B and where the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer is greater than 750kg.

Yes it is for towing and yes, that RSA website quotes directly from S.I. No 537 of 2006 Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations 2006. However the RSA page fails to include the following important section from SI 537
    Drawing vehicles.
    7. (1) A combination of vehicles which consists of a drawing vehicle and a trailer shall, for the purpose of these Regulations, be regarded as a vehicle -

    (a) in category B, where the drawing vehicle is in category B and the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle and the total design gross vehicle weight of the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg,

    (b) in category B, C1, C, D1 or D, where the drawing vehicle is in category B, C1, C, D1, or D, respectively, and the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg, or

    (c) in category W, where the drawing vehicle is in category W.
