Tinted windows failed NCT

My car failed the NCT today becasue I was told that the tint on the front 2 side windows was more than premitted .

I bought the car a few years ago secondhand with the windows the way they are . It passed 3 NCT since and I have been driving it round for at leat 5 years now if not more and never had an accident . Visability is find at night and i'm way passed being a boy racer .

    29134_1454120870062_1144502147_1329772_3170344_n.jpg

So now I have been told to remove the tint from just the 2 front windows or replace them with 2 new ones . As if 2 back windows tinted on their own wouldn't look stupid. I agree with some of the dark tints shouldn't be allowed but I have never once found the tint on my car casuing any problems seeing out at night .

How many more out there have been failed with this new NCT Test

What percentage of light are your tints letting in?

The max tint percent is 35%, which was brought in on the 1st of April this year.

The NCT cert reported tint level below 65% well it's wrote in blue pin on the cert 34% so I guess the test machine doesn't pint out a reading like every thing else thats on the cert .

Why isn't there a print out like every thing else with the exact number .

In that case you passed, so I'd be asking questions down at the NCT center asking why you failed specifically.

Can't see the pic too clearly either btw.

EDIT: Wait, I have a suspicion that the 34% refers to the amount of light getting in, and so you failed by 1 measly %!

Maybe u are not a boyracer...but in this case I support the new requirements. I'm sick of idiots flying down the road with their loud exhausts and dark tinted windows. I know of dozens who have failed the new NCT...I'm delighted for them

Excessively tinted front windows are both dangerous and stupid looking.

Unless I am mad - possible! - 35% is the amount of light you are allowed to block. 65% is the required amount of light getting in. Which means a fail by 30%

Well this is what the car looks like after I replacing the front windows at the weekend

I really wasn't fused about tinted windows was that way when i bought the car. Just the hassle and money to replace perfectly good windows is what is getting me . If any thing the sun now gets to me when i drive when before the tint took care of it .

As for night driving i don't see any better out the side window now . I managed not to hit anyone in the 5 years i've had the car thank god . This really doesn't make it any safer .

I hope they don't fail you now on those HIDEOUS car seat covers.......;):p

Don't I know it . They keep the seats clean that all they do . So as you can see the car is just a particle thing for me get me to work and back . Lost interest in trying to have a nice looking one a long time ago with the crap roads we have round here .

Had to replace the alloys I had with bog standard steel one as smashed a few in potholes .

    EPIC FAIL!!!

Window film from 2 windows can be removed in about 20 mins, without the need to replace the actual glass.

I know that but replaced the 2 windows in 10 mins and alot less messing about

I don't think so, first of all you complained about the cost of buying replacement glass. 10 mins is extremely optimistic for removing 2 door panels, removing 2 windows, replacing 2 windows and putting 2 door panels back on.

You could have removed the tint for free with absolutely no messing about, no removing of door panels, no taking glass out and putting it back in or paying for replacement glass, literally just rip the tint off

I put my car through the NCT yesterday and they never mentioned the tints, I failed on my rear suspension but my windows were grand! They are quite light though.

I'd suspect you'd lift the film at the edge of the window with a razor or Stanley blade , apply heat with a heat gun and slowly peel off.

Fitting tints to front windows is about as clever as smoking in the doorway of Tesco's... yeah it's "legal" - but you look a prat and piss off normal people.

Why would it piss people off? I've a light tint on mine, I didn't want the car to look like a van. And I'm normal

Is it not illegal to tint the front screens?

Just the windscreen, the side windows must allow 65% light in I think (it may be the other way around, too tired to think!)

Just failed the NCT over the tint on the side front windows. What surprises me is that it has passed for the last 3 years since i bought the car with the same tint on the windows. It failed over a corroded brake line and i missed the retest so it went through again and this time it failed over the tint. Looks like either the machine is faulty or they dont bother doing the test half the time.
