Car probably won't even start without the ecu.

Are you sure its the ECU? what are the symptoms and who diagnosed it,if the ECU is dead the car shouldn't start and certainly shouldn't drive.

Also make and model would be handy.

The car may run with a damaged ECU. Mine suffered water damage and would start but ran terribly.

Don't drive it. An ECU replacement is an expensive enough job without risking doing more damage. Your engine will be running all over the place, may rev uncontrolably etc. Not to mention the electrics will likely go haywire. You'd probably end up breaking down a mile down the road anyway.

If it's only a 5min drive it can't be that far to walk or cycle!

if its a 5 min drive it probably a 10 to 15 min walk get the exercise ya lazy git and get the car sorted out right as ecu can be the life of the ie if its fecked it cold blow de engine

A lot of mechanics blaim the ECU and find out its not the ECU. Theres a 2% chance that it can be an ECU and thats a fact!
What kind of car is it and what engine?
