Hi, we just bought an old house, it had an oil tank in the garden and an old boiler that looks very dodgy. We need a new header tank, emersion, and I'm guessing boiler.

There is gas in the sidewalk out front, so we could get hooked up to the gas supply, and get rid of the big oil container. I want a gas hob, as I prefer it to cook. This would mean a gas boiler, instead of oil.

I wonder what peoples opinions are, of the two, is one definetly preferable to the other? Is one cheaper, better, more efficent? Do one type of boiler last longer than the other?? Someone told me that oil boilers create better heat than gas boilers, but that sounds a bit crazy, surley heat is the same???

Also, what is a good type of boiler? Thanks!

Personaly if the gas was there I would go for it. It is cheaper than oil has a lower carbon tax and is not as smelly.

If it is an old house with a header tank the system will have to be power flushed before a new boiler is installed. During this process you can do away with the header tank and seal the system preventing further corrosion.

The boiler I would recommend is a system boiler. All the manufactures have system boilers. Which manufacturer you go for is up to your budget.

Top of the pile would be Viessmann, Vaillant and Worcester Bosch.
Then Ariston, Vokera, Glow-worm and Potterton.

Ariston do a great boiler called CLAS. It is neat and wouldn't look out-of-place any were in a house.

What ever boiler you go for make sure the system is cleaned prior to installation.
