Is it possible? Is there some way of turning the iphone into a modem to connect a laptop to it? Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I think it depends on the version of the phone. I know the 3GS does, not sure about the 3G.

You will probably need to ask o2 or vodafone for tethering to be activated on your account and you will more than likely have to pay extra for this.

There should be plenty of info on the Vodafone and o2 forums on their websites.

At the moment you have to jailbreak it in order to get this sort of functionality. Then it works as a wireless AP and your laptop can connect to that. The iOS 4 update will include this functionality baked in. However there is no real word about the limitations that will be placed on it, other that it costing extra in the US (and possibly elsewhere) and that you won't be able to connect an iPad to it (which seems a little bit petty to me).

Yes you can. OS3 on the 3g and 3gs has this setting available, however as part of the terms of your phone agreement you have to purchase the setting. It's sickening as it's a simple setting but O2 and Vodafone want to charge for it. It's a simple process of setting an apn on the phone, with a 3g if you are running os 3 but not 3.1.3 you can go to help.benm.at (from your iphone) and download a config file.

With 3.1.3 there was a baseband change that required the service provider to sign the config files so this hack won't work. Also the hack won't work whilst roaming.

As it's against the t&c without paying for it, go easy on using it - you could get cut off. Although I never did and I used it for nearly a year. The google god has a load of info on tethering on the iphone.

BTW I beleive IOS4 has been jailbroken already but they are holding back on the release until the ipad is launched. Google has a number of results regarding this too.

Oh and I forgot, you need an up to date itunes too for the driver. The phone will then appear as a network whilst connected. BTW Use a cable not bluetooth as bluetooth is too unreliable.

I have a 2G iPhone purchased from the US when they first launched.

The iPhone is jailbroken and I use the phone as a modem with the iPhone Modem application downloaded from Cydia.

works grand for what I need it for .. log in to a ascii text based system so Edge is fine on 2G.

I have no idea what this is like on 3G or 3Gs iPhones.

Can you do the same thing with a Windows Mobile phone- i have a Samsung phone running mobile 6.5 so this would be a great advantage if possible?

There's plenty of information on this if you use a search engine. For example I found this site http://maketecheasier.com/tether-your-windows-mobile/2009/07/16
