The "Great Firewall" of China

When I'm in China many websites that I use are blocked such as Facebook and Youtube for example.

I was thinking that maybe a work around would be to add the IPs into my hosts file of my favourite sites for my next trip there.

Is that likely to work, anyone have any other simple workarounds?
Another thought I had would be to install a private proxy on my Irish machine for use over there but I don't know how to set that up.

    Any advice?
