Written References at short notice

I've been called for a job induction next week and have been asked to bring two written references. Since it hadn't been mentioned before that we would need these, it seems a bit unrealistic to expect them at such short notice (seeing as it is also a Bank Holiday Weekend!).

Should I ask for more time to produce them? any ideas?

I always ask for a letter of reference if i've worked in a job for more than 5 or 6 months.. But even so, seems a bit lazy on their part! I'd definitely call them, say you need time to get them, and offer to give them reference details that they can call or email themselves to speed things up.
