One of the contributors to boards kindly sent me a for vrt 35 to accomodate changing a vehicles reg from the old reg to the zv reg. I called to the vro office and the lady initially refused to change the reg. However when I showed her the form with revenue stamp , she reluctanty agreed to look into it. Following a few phone calls , this was arranged.
I told this to a friend of mine and gave him a copy of the form. However when he called in they refused to change his reg. He had the old brown tax book and the lady stated that this meant the car was imported pre 93 and revenue would not have records of this. Is there anyway around this , I wonder.:(

    I wouldn't bother tbh.

My old car is 79 L and I enquired and could change to a ZV with 5 numbers. Decided to leave well enough alone.

    Interesting conundum!!
I presume it was a 79L*** type reg that he wanted to change?

I would think they have to change it,as once the car is over 30 years you have the option. What records wouldnt they have? I guess the issue here is the fact of the tax book, modern cars just have the vehicle registration cert, which is easily amended by issuing a new one.

I can't see that being the problem Carchaeologist. Usually if you change ownership of an older car and the brown log book is full they will then issue the new owner with a registration cert instead.
I think it just depends on who you meet at the VRO desk. Last year I brought two minis in from the UK. The first one I registered as a ZV but asked the lady if I could go for a 71 LK *** and then change to ZV later, she said "no, you have to decide which you want now".
A month later I was there again with the other mini and told a different lady that I wanted a 76 LK *** number. She told me that if I ever wanted to change it to a ZV that there would be no problem.
Maybe I should have asked her for that in writing :).

Regardless of what the VRO staff members claim, it IS and will remain possible to change a year related plate, the likes of 76 D or 69 WW xxx, into a ZV plate, as this option was introduced SPECIFICALLY for those cases where a car was imported in the period from 1986 up to to the introduction of the ZV allocation, since up until that point any import would automatically get the year denomination and you didn;t have an option at the time.

So this whole option to change the reg, was in fact specifically for cars in the 1986-1993 bracket, so that they would have refused to rereg your friend's car was in fact gross negligence from the VRO office!

The fact that you can now go for a 69 LK plate initially and change it into ZV a year later, is possibly not what the VRO had anticipated, and that's perhaps the reason for the reluctance of VRO staff, but that's just the nature of the loophole, I guess.

My experience with the VRO office has been less than positive to say the least. The previous time when I wanted to change my own car from 78 l to zv , I was told this could not be done. However when I produced the form which I had and showed her the Revenue stamp she had to ring Rosslare.
However this time , she refused to even ring Rosslare and said they would not have the records on computer as it was registered pre 93.
Hate to give in to them as it is more a matter of principle now, but am not sure what route to take next. Thanks a mil for your replies they are most helpful and any further information would be appreciated.;)
