Downloaded iTunes movie not appearing on iPad

I know you can watch movies as they download on the Macbook. Do you have to wait till the download is complete to watch on the iPad?

EDIT

I think I have it figured out. I've stupidly opted for the HD version and I think that is the problem. I think it would play while downloading if it were SD.
