German reg plate opinion...

The missus is getting some metal pressed German plates for her car. Would a nice plate surround with Ingolstadt printed on it compliment the plate, or look tacky? It's going on an Audi.

...and I thought I was anal.

I like the look of the "German Plates" with the "German Style" numbers

but was wondering are they illegal and would you get pulled by the cops.

I know the NCT are strict enough on them.

I think the German plates look well but a place name on a surround would be too much IMO. Stick to the simple plates I'd say .

They are ok for the NCT (afaik) once they have dashes between the different parts and the country on the left

    IRL 10 - D - 666

Dont really see the point with them - the only difference is that the zero has a dash through it ??

Technically they are illegal because of the zero's not being fully closed.

I think they can look well on some cars though

Think they look daft myself. But why stop there. Might as well go the whole hog and change your name to Gunter to compelte the look

I for one have better things to spend me money on.

    And leather jacket with tassles.

The German plate thing reminds me of Subaru & Mitsubishi drivers with the replica rally jackets.....very sad and a bit too obsessed with their cars

I've never been stopped, though I've not put my car through the NCT with them. I didn't go for any of that inspection sticker nonsense though. The county and country are all correct. The law seems quite vague on the font.
why would you even care about how number plates look...

Or indicators, alloys or paint for that matter...

It's the cheapest mod I've made to my car, and I think it has improved the look. If others don't like them, I would have to struggle to find something I care about less.

Sure it was the Mrs and not yourself? I was at the Almac car show in May and alot of the BMW guys had them. Seems more nerdy than tacky.

cos it can change how the car looks a fair bit

it's the small things that count

I have the pressed german plates.. i like them.. Have a 'BMW Autohaus Munchen' reg surround on the back..

Theyre only 20 quid so if you dont like them no big deal..

If you have shoddy numberplates on your car, honestly, go and change them for a good quality pressed metal plate. You won't understand how important it is until you do that (and clean your glass properly inside and out while you're at it).

Once you do that- you won't neglect them again.

They are the type of thing that do look well, but really take a keen eye to notice. Only on German cars too, look daft else where.

I'm not read in law, but by the sounds of these:

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1999/en/si/0432.html

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/format-vehicle-registration-plates.html
The use of Registration Plates in a format other than those shown above is Prohibited by Law and vehicle owners who use them may incur fines of up to €5,000.

It appears that an anal Garda / Customs Official could call you out on them. Then again they are EU plates and I actually find them easier to read, so I can't see a problem personally. Besides it being abit nerdy ;)

Sort of off topic, but its legal to have your plates on the dash inside the window i believe.

Could you fit pressed german plates and keep a stardard set in the car ON DISPLAY?

the standrd set may be needed for NCTs etc anyways...

 I have numberplates on my car, as long as they stay there I'm happy. I care about how the car looks and do clean it regularly (glass included) but plates are plates are plates IMO

If people feel the need to change them fair play to them, but I honestly cannot see the point

Im very tempted to get them on my audi as well. As for the surrounds i would like something like above only with a german garage like autohaus wolfsburg.

I have asked different guards about them and you get a mixed reaction about the legality of them.

I agree, they look fine as long as you don't put them on an Irish car.

I agree, they wouldn't suit a DeLorean at all.

    That's my very point.

The human equivalent is 'glasses are glasses are glasses' right up until when you fire the crappy ones in the bin once and for all.

I am going to drive up the middle lane of the m50 with my german number plates and my fog lights on:D:D

personally, I prefer pressed metal plates with the normal, "Irish" font and no fancy surrounds
