Damn, missed it. Did they tear him apart or just act all polite?

The longer version is on Saturday. 9 pm BBC2 I think.

Didn't see it but history shows how Tories who guest chair the show are much better than Labour members who do.

    Any "Two Jags" quips?

Hislop had some great digs in fairness:D

I thought it was the worst episode I've ever seen (and I saw both of Bruce Forsyth's shows). Really cosy, incestuous stuff, with barely an iota of satire in sight. Paul Merton was virtually silent throughout, and looked as though he really didn't want to be there.

They need a permanent presenter - preferably Angus Deayton again. Of course, this would involve getting rid of Paul Merton (and possibly Ian Hislop too), but that would hardly be such a bad thing.

    Get out.

Wasn't the best episode ever but Hislop got a few digs in. The extended version is on BBC 2 tomorrow night I think.

He's right about a permanent presenter though.

I hope they never bring Deayton back as a permanent host, I can't stand the smug tosser

    Same.

Don't like Alexander Armstrong either though, and everyone seems to love him - but he just seems like a Deayton carbon copy to me.

Didn't think last night's was too bad. Prezza's shit with the old autocue, but thought he was alright when he was talking off the cuff, I've always quite liked the bloke tbh; I mean he could be worse... he could be a Tory

Love him or hate him, Angus was a brilliant presenter. He was more than witty enough to get by and the dynamic between him, Merton and Hislop is what made the show.

eh maybe the show isnt for you!

About half the presenters are good, too much of the show had turned into how the presenter is actually presenting the show etc! e.g. mistakes on the autocue etc

I've just seen the extended version...not bad at all - John Bishop too.

Paul Merton was reportedly unhappy that John Prescott scored a hosting job on Have I Got News For You.

Prescott helmed the programme for the final episode of the series but the Daily Express claims that Merton was worried that it would make the show too political.

"Paul wasn't that comfortable with the idea as he knew the show would end up being very politically charged with Ian Hislop at Prescott's throat," a source said.

"Paul doesn't particularly like the shows when politics and personal animosity overtake the comic side of things."

The programme's executive producer Richard Wilson recently revealed that he has a wishlist of presenters including Joanna Lumley and Jeremy Paxman.

They could have given him a lot more, maybe they did before it was edited. Bring back Rolf Harris.:P

Boris Johnson should be the permanent host. Admittedly he might have more important stuff to do, like mayoring, but the guy was just hilarious.

Paul Merton is an idiot, he's always in a huff over something on the show!

It's a programme about news, of course there will be politics involved.

I'd argue he is the best thing about the show and the glue that's holding it together. I've seen him a few times doing impov live also and he is excellent.

Hislop is the star of the show for me! Nasty little runt at times but very funny.

I wouldn't say that. I've watched it fairly consistently since the early-90s, but as you say, too much of the show is now focused on the guest presenter (and whether or not they're able to make it look as though they aren't reading an autocue). Two or three decent episodes per series is a bit crap really.

I can't blame Paul Merton for being pissed off about Prescott hosting. For thirteen years, they've been slagging him off, and now they invite him on to 'be a good sport' and laugh at himself. It's sickeningly cosy. There was a time when politicians were generally scared to appear on HIGNFY, because they knew they'd be slaughtered, not just by the other panellists, but also by the host. After eight years of guest presenters (including such comedic giants as Carol Vorderman, Fern Britton and Eamon Holmes), it's all got so horribly toothless and lazy that you might as well be watching The One Show.

    Angus' finest ever introduction:

"So, bugger me if it isn't round one. Which it is, fortunately, so that's saved me from a rather undignified start..."

Merton isn't an idiot. And tbh those quotes say very little and they weren't even from him. It's not like he's gone whinging to the media, he just wasn't happy with the choice of guest host and someone went yapping about nothing.

maybe the extended version is a bad idea
