Qashqai +2 Vs CRV

All, i was half way through building a comparison spreadsheet when it occured to me an auld crowd source might be a more efficient tool.

I need to get a bigger car, wife is concerned about using the savings given current economic climate blah blah....doesnt change the fact we need a bigger car imo.

    so, the options are a
demo model Qashqai +2 (extra bootspace over normal qashqai is the draw here)
    comes with 3 year warranty,
low tax for the 1.6 T-diesel, approx 312 per yr
lower running costs with the diesel
    assume lower insurance? not sure
decent trade off current car but will eat heavily into our savings.

    Vs
    07 CRV
3 month warranty (simi registered dealer but have been reading on here that means sweetFA)
    low mileage
    tax at 600
2.0 petrol, will be a hard runner i reckon, full tank what, 80/85 quid odd?
    assume higher insuance
again decent trade off current car and the top up wont do too much damage to the savings.

so the issue (if its not obvious) is it better to spend good chunk of cash now for the overall lower running costs or small chunk of cash now but with higher costs and possible risk................is the crv too good a deal that there must be a catch?

Any opinions welcome, really need to make this decision soon, its annoyin me at this point.

    Cheers
    Col

How did you choose those two particular models?

If you absolutely must have something that looks a bit like the kind of thing that was fashionable for plumbers wives on the school run 2 years ago, fair enough, but I don't see the point in buying a fake off-roader otherwise.

An estate or a real MPV would make more sense to me.

I hear you, i do, i did take a look at both these options, only the new ford s-max appealed to me but it comes with a significant price tag.

We settled on these 2 models as we just had twins and the extra space height is a must. Both drive well and look reasonably ok for big cars, its a fair mix of practicality and style in my opinion, estates dont even address style, and call me shallow but i want a nice car too.

Hmm, not sure about that. Audi and Audi.

Estates generally look better than saloons nowadays.

Yes, I have an S-Max myself, and they aren't cheap, but nor are 07 CRVs.

Each to their own, I'd infinitely prefer an Audi, BMW, or Merc estate to any SUV, never mind a front-wheel-drive fake jeep like the Qashqai.

Personally can't see how a mommy wagon would be more stylish than a decent estate - but in fairness the extra height will probably save on visits to the back doctor.

The CRV would only make sense if it was very good deal, if you don't do large mileage and you'd be hanging onto it for a long time (driving it into the ground). The re-sale of a petrol CRV would be very poor I'd say.

What about an FRV rather than a CRV?
