    Hi,

I've a problem with my Vista laptop and was hoping you folks could please, please help me out...?

Basically I can't get the laptop to boot - it goes into the windows loading screen but only shows the loading bar against a black background and stays like that. I managed to boot in safe mode once when I first tested it but now that doesn't even work either - It keeps hanging at crcdisk.sys?

I didn't have any system restore options either when I first managed to boot in safe mode. I got no discs with the laptop only a software OS reinstall option that I can access by way of some Fkey menus on startup (unfortunately I need to back up my data first and this is another problem I have)

I booted using hirens BootCD and could see all my files but the USB port wasn't working so I had no way to save my data? - how can I back up my files if I can't back them up onto anything?

Anyone got any suggestion? Is there anyway to prevent the crcdisk.sys check thing so I can bypass it and get to backup my files?

    Any other recovery options available?

Thanks in advance for any help folks, am pretty desperate at this stage :(

    J

    Simplest solution?

Buy a 2.5" cradle and back up to another machine.

    Cheers for the reply,

Managed to use a boot disc to access my files and back them up - but, I can't restore my OS to factory settings - it's stating it can't see any backup?

What can I do now as this was my only method of reinstall - I never received a DVD with the laptop?

    Thanks again

If it didnt come with a disk they either:
    A) Expect you to count on a recovery partition
    B) Expect you to burn your own, but you woulda noticed the reminder popups.

Can you borrow a Vista{Insert Version here} Disk?

    Hi,

Story so far: there is supposed to be a recovery partition option but when I try to execute it a message comes up saying that no backup is present? I've even downloaded a vista recovery disc but that brings up the same message.

I don't have access to any physical vista discs either, plus I'm not even sure if it's 32bit or 64 bit (the microsoft tag underneath has worn off and I can't boot in safe mode to check system spec) Is there any way I can find out the exact spec of my system if I can't boot in normal or safe mode? - I don't even have any documents with the laptop.

I have an external usb cradle for hard-drives though, would it work if I took the drive out and hooked it up to a working laptop and attempted to repair the disk that way? If so what software would I use?

    Cheers,

    J

whatever you do dont install vista again.

use xp pro or windows 7.Vista is designed for maximum fustration

you can put your drive into the cradle, access it from another computer and back it up.

then re install a (non vista) o/s

    thats all

Yeah it's looking like I'll have to go with a new OS - I have a verion of windows 7 that I can throw onto it but it's a cracked copy that can't be update - is it a bad idea to go with this option? By that I mean would missing future updates pose a major security risk? I'm thinking of using this option until I can locate a legit copy of vista home premium 64 which I can use my own serial key with. Watcha think?

I hear ya about not installing vista again but I don't want to fork out on a new OS for a laptop I'll only get another year or so out of...

MODs no likey talk of pirate software!

If you have a licence key for Vista get on to MS and get an upgrade to 7:)

First priority is to back up your data though. Use the cradle and it will appear in a similar fashion to a USB key :)
