    Hi,
I found an ad for a car and it is priced significantly cheaper than all others of the same year/make. Normally these ads seem to belong to someone living in spain and need money to ship the car back to ireland etc
But this had a mobile number so I rang the seller and he assured me all is well with the car, he is only selling it because it was his wife's car and they need a bigger car because of a new baby, and needs a quick sale.

He gave me the reg and i ran a check with autocheck.co.uk and everything came up perfect.

He's an english bloke, (i have his name), living in the north, but only a 15minute drive away from me. He said he'd rather not meet at his house because he lives in a predominately protestant area and was quite isistant that he showed the car outside the area, he did suggest however a public location in Dundalk that he would be able to show me the car.

This was when the alarm bells started ringing, i agreed to meet him tomorrow anyway, no harm in looking.
I'll have a friend with me, who also knows his way around cars too, to have a look with me.

Am i being overly paranoid or should i have something to worry about, has he something to hide, especially as he doesn't seem to want to give away his home address?

Any thoughts? What do you think?

Insist on meeting at his house.

Sounds dodgy to me so I wouldn't even risk looking at the car to be honest. If it sounds like a duck and walks like a duck, chances are it is a duck.

It could be genuine but its a lot more likely not to be, so if it were me Id not be taking the chance tbh.

Just from the sellers perspective - I generally meet ppl at a public place when they want to see the car but assure them that the deal will be done at the house if they are interested.
You can always look over the car - check it out and if still interested insist that you meet at his house. Check the address with vlc and when you get there ask to use the bathroom :) -so you know its his house, not some random house on the street

The fact that he says he lives in a Protestant area might be the give away. His area might be one of those still preoccupied by good old fashioned Orange Order bigotry and might take a dim view of someone turning up at a door with Eire number plates? They tell me it still isn't all peace and love in that part of the world yet, although I wouldn't know as I don't live there.

Ask him what area he is from, get his specific address and ask around, maybe even on here to see if it actually is a no go area for a southern reg car?

    I'd be wanting:

    1. Photo ID (ie passport) to prove that he is who he says he is.

    2. The V5 with all details matching the car and showing it to be registered to him, as per the photo ID.

It could be a case that the car is fine but he doesn't want some nutter turning up 6 months later because one of the bulbs are blown...

It's your call to make but I would be careful.

I want to see some ID and proof of ownership. Any more excuses walk away.

Insist on photo ID and the V5 as Anan says, and check the vin no on the V5 against the car and against the autocheck report.

Me neither, had more then a hand full of knackers call up to the house over the years when passing cars on. Meet down the local shopping centre car park is what I done afterwards.

no matter how perfect the car is it could still be a lemon, could be stolen with false documents, maybe the engines perfect but is about to fall out? you never no. if you buy private you need a land line number you have rang and gotten him straight away, incase its a pub or something, i would even go as far as to ask for 2 proofs of address and national identifacation if he wont meet at home. if tis cheaper theres a reason, he wants it gone quik, no questions. maybe thers vrt due?

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck :D

There would be a big bill, you'd have to be quackers to consider it?

I sold the wifes car a few years ago to a stupid bitch person and they plauged me after about stupid things that were irrelevent.

There loads of stolen V5's doing the rounds? Make sure the V5 is legit also.

    Stolen V5 either:
Matches car VIN but not HPI report
Matches HPI report but not car VIN.

    Can't do both.

as a seller you should send away the change of ownership. only time a buyer will see this (before it comes back in his/her nane) is when they are putting there name and address on it

Would you buy a car without examining the VLC to make sure that all the information matched the car and that the seller was indeed the registered owner?

Went today for a look, and you know what?, it didn't seem too bad, maybe a wee bit of work here and there but overall it wasn't too bad.A little wear and tear , but the wheels did seem to rattle and shake a little when i drove it above 160kmph and it started to pull to the side when i loosened my grip on the steering wheel:eek:
BUT....alarm bells were definitely still ringing, I don't want to start a debate on Itinerants or whatever word you use or a bashing thread, i actually know quite a few and am very friendly with them, but i just couldn't trust yer man. Something didn't seem right and i just had to say no.
English car, quick sale, his story didn't quite fit together but his id did match his paperwork etc. He even "received" 3 calls for the car while i was looking at it, and i could see his 2 mates rining from across the carpark:rolleyes:

All the documents checked out, as did the checks on the reg though.

You were certainly getting what you paid for but it was a chance i wasn't gonna take, it would have certainly cost me a few bob down the line so no real savings as far as i was concerned.
Now maybe it was genuine but it just didn't seem right and as itsnotmyname said:"if it looks like a duck......."

unbelievably i rang about 3 other cars today in the north before i went up to view them and they all sold this morning and late yesterday evening!! I went to dublin to see anther one and it was a complete ball of ****e compared to the pics on the net!!
    The search continues.

Btw the car i was looking at was a 08 saab 93, do a quick search on any of the car sites and you'll find it handy enough, cheapest by far.
