Diagnostic scanner? or software

    Hi all,
    I am a amateur mechanic (at a push)
    and was thinking about buying a diagnostic scanner for use mainly on my E46 BMW 318i 2000.

    Anyone know of a good value (not necessarily cheap) one?
    Anything under say €200.

    Or would I be better off just buying the connectors to be used with a laptop? - If so, - what is the best software for me to buy (download) ;-)
