Hi, mature student here planning to start UCd in Sept. I am on jobseekers allowance currently and hoping to qualify for BTEA. As I live in Laois i will have to relocate to Dublin and rent there. However I own a house in Laois which I will have to rent out in order to pay the mortgage or at least half of it. Is it possible that I can get rent allowance to live in Dublin while I am studying?

I'm not 100% about the situation if you own a house, but I reckon you will be means tested.

But I know you can keep any entitlement you are receiving prior to getting your BTEA i.e if your are getting rent allowance now you can hold onto it when you get your BTEA.

Im not sure, but I dont think you can apply for rent allowance after you have your BTEA

If you ring your local VEC and speak to someone from the adult education department, they are usually great help.

In order to qualify for rent allowance you have to be seen to have a housing need and be on the waiting list for a council house. As you own your own home you won't be entitled. I'm pretty sure of this but the only way to find out for certain would be to visit your CWO.

    Hi OP,

In a similar vein, you cannot apply for Rent Allowance if you are on the BTEA, as full-time students are not permitted to apply for Rent Allowance.

However, if you are already in receipt of Rent Allowance and then go onto BTEA, you are entitled to retain your Rent Allowance.

    Hope this helps,

    Bob

How about claiming Mortgage Interest supplement on your mortgage while in College? Is that possible?

You will need to contact your CWO because each persons case will be dealt differently. With Mortgage Interest Supplement you have to pay atleast Euro20 of the interest yourself per month

"If you will be in receipt of rent allowance from the local health board, again let the Residence Office know. In 2010-11 there will be a limited number of places reserved on campus for students on rent allowance. Please be aware that rent allowance is available to students who are on back to education allowance and who have been in rented accommodation for the previous six months. Please check your eligibility for rent allowance well in advance of coming to college":mad:
