I know TKMaxx have some great bargains, but don't you find that actually finding stuff you want in your size is a pain in the arse there?

not really...but i use tk maxx in cork and limerick so maybe the dublin ones are harder to find proper sizes in? ive never had any problems, although it is a killer every once in a while finding something you like and then see that it isn't available in your size...luck of the draw i guess.

edit: ankle support is something that's under debate when it comes to hiking/trekking gear. many say you are better to build up/strengthen your ankles and not over-protect them with boots, others think this train of thought is the work of the devil...best bet is to wear what you find comfortable, whatever works for you!

Thanks for that, I will try TK max.

I have been using boots for a long time now, I just liked the style. And seen bear running around like a mad man with them on.

Where is the best place to get footwear?

i wouldn't skimp on footwear (i'm a boot lover too) and would recommend places like Great Outdoors, 53 Degrees North, Mahers Outdoor Shop (Cork)...somewhere you can get sized up properly and get some good advice.

Dublin based posters might be best to advise you though OP!

Great outdoors are great, but they can be a little pricey.
Ask for help though, and they're customer service, is great, I've found anyway.

If you're buying a lot of gear I'd look into getting their loyalty card.
I can't remember off the top of my head but I think it gets a 10% discount.

As far as ankle support goes, I'm a firm believer in boots.
I hike in a pair of these, which I have found great. Nice and light, good fit and keep the water out great.
All I can think of is I have found, during the coldest winter I can remember mind you, they have been a little cold towards the end of the day. That can be solved with an extra pair of socks though.

I have a pair of those summer trecking shoes too, they are nice for light walking or doing what Bear Grylles does, as you've mentioned but I wouldn't hike in them.

Downstairs in Great Outdoors is the sale area now and you can grab some nice bargains down there, I have anyway.
I've not much experience with any of the other shops, mostly because I've never needed to go anywhere else.

Good luck anyway, OP and do look around TKmaxx, great deals in there.

    Cheers Mate,

I was in TK Maxx. I got a nice rain coat and a pair of craghopper kiwi's for 50 euro.

Also picked up a pair of shoes to try out. But i think i will end up going back to boots. Do i have my old army boots but as i said before, I am after something more comfortable.

I seen them GTXs on the gadget show lol!

I will look in to it.

    Cheers

You could try the North Face or TOG24 in Kildare Retail Village.
