Ethical Advertising to Aid road Safety

Driving around the country roads in the Summer you'll notice more animals are around, there's more people on horse back etc.

What's missing are any road signs, watch out for our wildlife, Horse Riders be careful.

I know the RSA probably hasn't much money and it can't put up speed cameras on every road.

I got to thinking why doesn't the Government force companies into spending some of their advertising budget on ads that's won't be thrown away every day like the papers.

What would be wrong with some signs to say" Danger Animals" "Protect our Wildlife" etc sponsored by XXXXX

Is there anything stopping business from putting up such signs. I think it makes a lot more sense than putting ads in the paper everyday.

/something I witnessed between a young horse rider and 5 guys in a clapped out micra prompted me to write this, we really need more signs on country roads.

Why not do it out of your own pocket? IMO, forcing you to do it is no more or less reasonable than forcing companies to do it.;)

What's a full Color page in the independent for a day, 20,000? + , That's a lot or road signs.

I might just sponsor a road sign, I really thought somebody was going to get killed last night. Those dudes in the Micra had no idea there were horse riders about.

But how do you solve the problem of the sign being there all the time but the horse riders only being there occasionally?

So people see the sign, slow down the first time they pass but the more they pass the more immune they get to the sign as they dont come accross any horse riders.

I'm sure we could buy a lot of road signs if we sold your car too.

I suppose you can't really, we'll just have to leave it to chance.

A speed camera wouldn't do the job either, maybe bumper cars for anyone under 21?

Or intelligent signs that only turn on when the horse riders are actually there, now that would be clever and prevent accidents, but be expensive and provide no revenue back to the government so will never happen.

Wait... are there really that many horse -car accidents?
A badger ran out in front of me last night while I was fairly "tipping along" as they say, I slowed down and it was fine. Would a sign have helped either of us?

Not in the least it would, just another stupid distraction from the business of driving. Way too many signs on our roads as it is IMO.

That's where business comes in, rather than coca cola spending 20 grand for one day in the independent make them put in one of these intelligent road signs in place.
I've thought of a way to do it, the horse riders before them go on the road could call a mobile number inside the sigh that would make it start flashing. much like a gsm alarm works. I reckon I could have a working example for under a thousand euro.

But a company wont pay for a sign advertising themselves unless its on all the time.

Badgers are wildlife, If the area is known for badgers get a "watch out for our badgers" sign put up, it might make people who don't know the area slow down.

There's a good few cow accidents, I know 2 guys who wrote off a car by hitting one and another guy who totaled a golf by hitting a deer.

You still haven't answered my question - why should Coca Cola be responsible for paying for these signs?

exactly. they could just paint the horse day-glow orange and advertise on that instead, much more effective :pac:

+1 for a "She rides, horsey dies" campaign.

Goddamn hooligan equestrians, wrecking our roads.

    Your joking right?

No one goes out of there way to run over foxes. I killed one last year after making a great efffort to swerve round one. (he turned back after i swerved around him/her back into my path)

Rsa do a piss poor job as it is without a save the trees campaign

Ethical Advertising. I just feel 2 much money is wasted in throw away advertising. You throw money at it and it's gone the next day.

I think the figure is about 1.4 billion that was spent in advertising in 2009 in Ireland. If we put even just .4 billion into to permanent advertising that aids safety I think it would make a difference.

Im aware Badgers are wildlife. 80% of my commute is through the countryside, every area is "known for wildlife". I see some dead wildlife, I see some run across the road from time to time. Its a factor of living and driving in areas surrounded by fields and nature. Putting up signs wont make me (or anyone) slow down for random forest critters, as the chances of seeing these animals is low (dont come out that often and even then tend to dart quite fast in and out) and the sheer area covered is "everywhere not Dublin" (/city).
There's a good few cow accidents, I know 2 guys who wrote off a car by hitting one and another guy who totaled a golf by hitting a deer.
Cows are farm animals not wildlife. If they are on the road (very rare) its because they are being moved, every such area Ive seen already has a "Cow Crossing" sign. There is nothing to add here, I dont know the specifics of the cases you describe.

I think you are trolling, "Ethical Advertising..".. my god are you just in from [insert communist country here]? Advertising is a Business function. Businesses can spend their money on what they want. If they want to try increase sales via promoting their product, off they go, thats the point of business and trade. Its not a "waste" or throw away, its not a right, its a service they pay for themselves, out of their own pocket.
You cannot brand you own personal definition of "ethics" on them or anyone else, thats completely anti-democracy and anti-capitalist. You cannot make Coca-Cola or Intel or HP spend money making your Roads safer, Medical care better etc (outside of their taxes already contributing), its not their job, if they want to do that, then they can. But that too would be advertising wouldnt it?

OK, i'll rephrase my question. What gives you the right to dictate to companies how they spend their own advertising budgets?

Not a thing in the world, I just thought some of them could spend some of the money on something a little more useful.

Hey it was just a thought, Just want to save a few horse riders.
