    Hello all,

Had no idea where in "Motoring" to put this. Its bigger than a camper van, and possibly than a 4x4. Mods, feel free to move.

Anyway, as some of you may know I have an old Dublin Bus tree cutter dating from 1975 and built in Inchicore. It was on the telly recently:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/tecmovie#p/u/3/XjpA-sctyAc

Anyway, I can do a lot of the mechanical work and some of the electrics, but it is in need of a half roof which needs a good fabricator who can build the very simple roof frame and rivet the aluminium sheeting on to it.

Anyone up for such a challenge? Or indeed know anybody else who might be able to? Its not all that mobile at the moment sadly so getting it to (and remortaging the house to pay for ) a coachbuilders isnt reall an option at the moment.

Help an old bus to smile again!

    Cheers,
    Simon

Will get a few photos up tomorrow Corktina, she looks well once you squint a bit!

Plan is really just to get her back on the road and off to a few rallies. My Dad was a CIE busman all his life and was looked after very well by the hospice at Leopardstown Park Hospital so I would also like to let them use it for their fetes, and any other chance to get her to out.

Needs a lot of work though, she was looked after when she was a tour bus but in her later days as a tree lopper she was thrown all over the place and every part of the interior was ripped out. Eventually when we got her, she had also had a small fire under the engine and a lot of the remaining electrics were burned out.

Ive done a fair bit on the electrics and some body patching too - they were made out of fairly cheap box steel bodies so theres some pretty bad corrosion. The half roof will at least create a dry area and then I can work on making a more water resistant viewing area at the back.

She was built in Inchicore towards the end of our bus building days so it would be so nice for her (and in memory of my da) to have her back out plodding around (slowly!) again.

Will get that request on for you this afternoon after 2.30 :)

Good shot above of DF839 (the penultimate Atlantean built in Dublin). Its still very much around and in great condition.

Will set up a fotpic/flickr site at some stage today and upload the shots of the (far rougher!) looking D635. [NERD] The DF's had Daf engines, the D's retained their old Leyland 680 engines. [/NERD]

    We are,
but nerd pride is OK and well supported at phantom towers.

Great station, play something by my mates band "The Swill" Simon (ex members of Wolfmother + Kid Koala).

I won a best insult competition with them once, couldn't beleive they read it out on air. I'm afraid allthough the insult contains no swearing per se I think I'd still get banned for posting it up here.

theirs an old bus yard ( CIE ) over opposite your Offices ( over Richmond motors right ? )

if you where standing outside the building looking straight across, count down about 8-9 buildings to your right, theirs a big painted wooden door ( sticks out like a sore thumb ) i know of 6-10 of these buses still their among other various ex DBs .

its well worth the 5-10 minute walk, weather you can get access ill never know but thats the next hurdle in your hunt for parts i guess.

irish motoring museum also do resto jobs AFAIK....

they might be good fellas to talk to due to first hand experience with these ?

I must go and take a look, thanks for that pdfile. Im trying to picture where it is. Im looking accross to the southside of the river right? Theres a big bonded warehouse directly accross the river from us and then its new builds then for a bit down towards the Samuel Beckett bridge. Further down past the bridge? I will take a walk (whistling innocently of course) down there later on.

Have just signed up for a photobucket account so will get some pictures of my roofless atlantean later today. Was sent a couple of nice ones of her in her roofed and tour days so I will get those too.

    Cheers,
    Simon

Ok, so heres my first stab at putting up photos. Will get some interior ones too:

    This is her now:

This is her as a tourbus:
    635ToursDB.jpg

In her last days as a tree-cutter:
    635TreeCutting.jpg

And finally, up in the yard with her engine donor, an old Warrington Atlantean. Anyone up on swapping Leyland 680 engines?
    635andwarrington.jpg

I think this should work as a link to the album as I add photos:

Alot of those Atlanteans had DAF engines in them as the Leyland ones were unreliable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Did the Warrington Atlantean take over from it as the tour bus?
Ironic that it would donate its engine to keep the older bus running.

    Hi Carchaeologist,

The Warrington one was a Guide Friday Dublin tour bus and when I went to buy the engine, they threw in the rest of the bus for free!

The engine in my one dates from 1979 (original engine is long gone) and the one in the Warrington bus is from 1978 (the bus itself is from 1981) but its in great condition as is its gearbox.

Ive been trying to get someone with a forklift or a very heavy duty trolley to do the swap for a year now. Its a pretty simple job, its just the scale that makes the difference. Free Warrington Atlantean and a challenging engine for the first person to volunteer to do the swap in the yard!

JimBob is very kindly going to help me out with my roof "issues".

    Cheers,
    Simon
