Just doing a bit of research for a friend currently doing the Leaving Cert.

I know of people who got the Baccalaureate in Theology and Arts (BATh) in St. Pat's on their CAO, but following their first year dropped Theology and continued on with the two Arts subjects they had selected.

Does anyone know if there are any special difficulties in doing so? Does it require special request to do, etc etc?

I think you have to tell them you plan on doing it before your summer exams.

I also think there's possibly a ~€50 fee to switch over to NUIM.

Hmmm, never heard of this before...that's some backdoor! Points for Theology/Arts were 315 this year, against 375 for Arts in the uni.

I did Theology and remember a few people doing this. I think I remember one lad saying he needed to get a first class honours overall in first year if he wanted to drop it. Not sure if thats true or not.
