Pulled over for L Plates on the motorway

What is the procedure when you are pulled over for L plates on the motorway and told to produce your licence (Provisional!) at a garda station?

Do you have to produce it at the garda station mentioned or could you produce somewhere else i.e. the garda station close to where you work, or would the designated station be the only one with record of the incident?

How serious an offence is it? I tried searching through the legislation but couldn't find anything on the area.

If you get a court summons would it be serious punishment or a fine/penalty points?

I'll leave this open, but it fits within the charter in terms of being closed .. just so you know.

You should be asked to nominate a Garda station where you will produce, which can be any Garda station in the state.

Is it even possible to get penalty points on a provisional?

    Technically not.

The points are "queued" on the system and applied when you get a full license. As the "provisional" is actually a "permit" and not a "license", it is not eligible to get points put on.

You have to produce at the station you nominated within ten days. This is why you are given the choice of station. You may also be looking at a summons for the offence of driving unaccompanied if you were alone at the time.

You can drive on a motorway with L plates, provided you have a full licence.

You can't drive on a motorway with a Learners Permit. So doesn't really mater if you have L plates or not, there's also a fine for non display of L plates.

    Er yes, Del2005 is correct.
Just because your aquaintances haven't been caught (yet) doesn't negate the fact that it is illegal for a Learner Permit holder to drive on a motorway and there are penalties (points and monetary) if caught and prosecuted. Not displaying L-plates is another offence with it's own set of penalties.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I managed to find something when researching motorways in the roads act 1993 and its an offence for a provisional licence holder to drive on the motorway - punishable by a max fine of €1000 and/or 6 months imprisonment.

Would these not give you a hint that L drivers aren't allowed? They are at the entrance to ALL motorways.

Plus that little book called the "Rules of the Road" which one is supposed to have studied in preparation for the theory test before getting a Learner Permit, and which one is supposed to continue studying while learning to drive.
