I'm hoping to get my learner permit soon and was wondering how much does tax and insurance generally cost for a learner driver?
Do I have to have tax and insurance in order to take lessons and do the driving license test?
I'm talking about the car licence btw.

Tax depends on the car (Usually engine size, unless after '07 or '08 IIRC)
All rates are available on www.motortax.ie

Insurance for a learner, depends on a lot of factors. Could be anywhere from 1k to 3k+ - I recommend using various companies online quote facilities to get a general idea.

If it's your own car, then you need tax, nct and insurance in order to have the car on the road at all, especially for the test.

If you're planning on doing lessons/test in the instructors car, you do NOT need to worry about tax or insurance.

    Hi Quinnd6
I have my learner permit 2 months and last week i just bought my first car. The car was taxed until next march but will cost me €286 for the year, my insurance is €1114, deposit of €176 and monthly payments of €119 for 9 months. I am female and i am 40 and my car is a Renault Clio (2001) and a 1.2l. I know for young male drivers it could be a lot more.
