Aldi USB turntable coverts to the free audio file format Ogg. This looks good, it's great hardware makers are starting to use Ogg. Handy but i wonder if the supplied software works with GNU/Linux? It may well work anyway using plug and play: http://aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/special_buys3_13033.htm

I would forget about any included software and just use what your distro provides.
Once the turntable is recognised as a sound source you should have no problems recording from it in any format supported on your install.

Personally i would be looking to FLAC for lossless recording.

    It also has
RCA line out to feed direct to audio amplifier

which you can feed to the line in of your sound card and record from that if you wish.

It's discovered as a generic usb audio sound card under windows, never tested it with any Linux distro, but I can't see why it can't work. Comes with audacity on a disk. (Well at least the version by silvercrest did :P).

What are the results from the tunrtable?

Are they good enough to warrant the purchase?

well the quality seemed grand, I was actually installing it for a customer. Cables were a little short, but maybe that was just the silvercrest version. Really not bad for 50 euro.

I decided to give myself an early wee Xmas pressie .... and bought one of these.

Just unpacked it and not yest tried it.

Yes it does have the Jack plugs to plug into an amplifier, in addition to the USB socked (cable supplied).

The CD that comes with it has Audacity ...... prebuilt fo Win and MAC it seems, but the full source with instructions etc for the Linux user to build the application themselves.

The version is 1.2.6 which, as expected is a little behind the times, but not badly at all.

I am impressed by the fact that the software is provided on the disc.

Now .... off to play with the new toy :) ..... have to find the adjustments for the arm weight etc etc if they exist.

    regards.

    :D:D

I have only played a little with the device, but like what I have seen so far.

I am having difficulty decididing what software to use to record the output.
It seems Audacity is what everyone recommends ...... but for some reason I do not get on well with it. My fault most likely ..... but for what I want something a lot simpler would be suitable.

I have used Gnome-recorder and I get an output file in Flac which is good, but it is a little too simplistic.

I am still looking for something in between that and Audacity ....... if you have any suggestions please post.

    Thanks.
    ;)
