I got a rare treat today, I saw one of Ireland's Rarest hunters, the agile Pine Martin.

I was in a friends of mine farm today, and I was helping him do the herding.
He land is near the shannon callows, and as it had been a year since I was there we said we would go for a walk.

My friend had been regailing me of the amount of times he had seen a pine martin, I said are you sure, "they are very rare in ireland"

Well low and behold as we were driving out of the field I nearly put my head through the wind screen I jammed on the breaks so hard as a Pine Martin ran across in front of me, I was not fast enough to get a photo.
My friend assures me that not only are they there, but he reg sees 2 together.

It's good to see a few more Irish Hunters back on the scene!
    Note to self"get a DSLR":D:D:D

Fantastic creatures. My wife and I were out for a walk in Glenbarrow on Sunday when one jumped out on to the path in front of us, sat down. looked at us and then fled the way it had came.
Was sorry I didn't have the camera with me also, but hey! isn't that always the way!!!;)

jaysu Tac ya may leave out a bunny for that fella and take a pic, thats a once in a lifetime chance. i have never seen a pine martin in the wild, nor am I likely to. it would be tricky enough to get it in fairness but worth a try:)

Well my mates land is very remote, and he maintains he has seen a few.
I'll try to get a pic, I really could do with a DSLR; but at €500+ for anything serious I may but it on my wish list.

The phone cam is only any good for up close shots.
I was trying to take a pic of a hare as well in the same field but it came out all blurred as he was ~75 yards

A digital camera with exchangeable lenses
Nikon D5000 I was looking at to be precise, with a telephoto lens 300mm
Digital select lens reflex DSLR which basically means you can exchange lenses depending on settings eg close up , far away, wide angle etc...

    Nice bit of kit....
I have one similar on order from the mrs for my 23rd birthday...I mean 43rd..
But thinking of something a bit more compact as I would like to take it stalking this season...Not all shooting has to done with a rifle;)

I have to get a good cam, most wild creatures are never close enough to be photographed with a standard cam that you would take holiday snaps with

    Maybe

    But the zoom is poor

Pine martens are probably one of our most beatifull native mammals and its great to see them making a comeback in recent years. Good news for forresters, game keepers etc. too, since they are major predators of Grey squirrels.:)

Sorry to nitpick, but the 'S' stands for 'Single', not 'Select'.

    Ooops
    Well spotted!
Hard to be right all the time.:D
I appreciate the Digital Single lens reflex cameras most unique ability is changing lenses. A bridge camera is probably more up my street at the mo, as DSLR go into mad money

A lot of friends have them in various forms, Mostly Nikon or Cannon, I prefer nikon myself but that is just me, thousands would disagree.

I'd love a good cam to take pics of deer etc in the off season.
My little Nokia/Carl Zeiss does not cut the mustard most times ;)

I have seen a few about here as well. I caught one in a mink trap a few weeks ago, let him go! When i was opening the trap using a bit of a twig he caught it - serious set of knashers on them!

Anyone ever see stoats? I was out for a cycle this evening and i seen a pair of them. Two weeks ago i seen 2 separate stoats in other locations near me as well.

I was quite close to one last year.

Here's the link to the story.

Apparently there are pine martins up our way, never seen any though.

Hi there, I'm carrying out a study at the moment investigating if there is any evidence that the pine marten is in some way responsible for the comeback of the red squirrel in the midlands (especially Laois and Offaly) over the last decade or so... I'd really appreciate if anyone who has seen a pine marten (or either squirrel species) in the last few years would report the sighting by going onto the website http://www.woodlandmammals.com/Survey.html, it only takes a minute! or calling me on 087 1498859. Any sightings will contribute to the distribution survey, and hopefully towards a better understanding of what is going on between the three species!
    Thanks!

Pine martins definitely more plentiful around my neck of the woods the last few years! Havn't seen as many gray squirrel around as i used to, but sadly no sign of the reds making a come back here!
